Last night, I attended the 20th birthday bash for the (Open Pool Australian Lightwater) reactor at ANSTO, Australia’s only nuclear reactor. It was built as the successor of HIFAR (HIgh Flux Australian Reactor), which operated from 1957-2006. Great to see so many young people there who are enthusiastic about nuclear energy and the critical role it will have to play in conjunction with wind and solar technologies in combating climate change. Momentarily restored my faith in Australian science.
Had asked so many technical questions five minutes into the tour portion (no phones allowed in reactor building — no pics) that the tour guide was thinking, “What in the world of neurospicy do we have here?” The number of lives this very facility has saved around the globe is truly mind-boggling to consider — notable is the recent development of an almost 100% curative treatment for inoperable prostate cancer. Not to mention the 50% of the irradiated silicon in every bit of technology containing an integrated circuit (which is almost everything) on the planet.

As much as I love the romance of using a crystal oscillator in an erase head bias generator, I just don’t think it’s gonna cut it compared to the #555. Highest frequency crystal I could easily get was only 38kHz, which is about half of what it needs. The 555 IC gets ~1% of the ideal 100kHz. Well, I limped through another step in the prototyping of the magnetic thingy-ma-bob, I’m calling “Vicious Cycle”.

Change of scenery and perspective over the weekend continuing sessions for feature length record. It was refreshing not having to operate and play — I haven’t done that in a while. That old kit performed wonderfully. This old pile of gurgles, grinds and groans did okay too. Nico slept for both of us; little angel. Exhausted but utterly elated. Good times 🙂
