Police Transport Command - NSW Police Force The NSW Police Force now assumes full responsibility for policing the State’s Transport Network. We are moving into exciting and challenging times.

The face of transport policing has just had a massive shift with the establishment of the Police Transport Command (PTC). By the end of 2014 the PTC will consist of 610 sworn officers who will bring major improvements to policing outcomes on our transport corridors. The Command is recruiting energetic and enthusiastic frontline officers who will actively police bus, ferry, taxi and rail transport, with the goal of reducing crime. Police attached to the PTC will have full policing capabilities to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour, in response to the most up-to-date intelligence. The PTC will support all NSWPF commands and communities by patrolling into known trouble areas, whilst keeping a vigilant eye across the transport network to reduce the threat of terrorism. The command will continue to grow and work in partership with key government agencies towards its purpose in reducing crime and improving customer service.

Since 21st August 2026, new e-bike seizure laws have come into effect.

Not all e-bikes sold in Australian shops or through online retailers are legal for road use. E-bikes that operate at higher speeds, have high-powered motors (even if restricted by software), or do not require pedalling cannot be used in public places.

Use of these non compliant e-bikes can attract significant penalties and may be seized by police and authorised officers. Any e-bike that has a throttle cannot exceed 6kph without being pedalled and all power assistance must cut out at 25kph. Currently, the maximum legal power output for an e-bike used in a public place in NSW is 500 watts. However after the 1 March 2029 this will be reduced to 250 watts.

Apart from ensuring that your e-bike is legal, e-bike riders must follow the same road rules that apply to regular bicycles. This includes wearing a helmet, not carrying more passengers than the bike is designed for, and complying with footpath riding rules. If you are 16 years of age or older and are not supervising a child under 16 years of age who is riding a bicycle, you cannot ride on the footpath.

Non-compliant e-bikes present a significant safety risk, to the rider and other people present. Remember, if you ride a non compliant e-bike in a public place it can be seized and destroyed.

Six people have been charged during an Operation Percentile deployment targeting retail crime in Sydney’s inner west.

Operation Percentile aims to detect, disrupt and deter retail crime offenders, with the objective of preventing stock loss, protecting customers and retail workers and deterring anti-social behaviour.

Between 3pm and 9pm Thursday 13 August 2026, officers attached to Police Transport Command North West, Burwood Police Area Command and the Bankstown Youth Engagement Team conducted operation at a shopping centre and surrounding retail and transport precincts in Burwood.

Police worked alongside loss prevention officers from major retailers throughout the operation.

As a result of the operation, 16 people were arrested, with six people charged with a range of offences including larceny, goods in custody, assault, possession of a knife, drug possession, and breach of bail.

Police also issued eight Criminal Infringement Notices, four youth warnings and one youth caution.

As part of proactive policing activities, officers conducted 17 person searches and issued three move-on directions.

In an incident of note, police arrested a 42-year-old woman after she was allegedly detected stealing from a bottle shop on Liverpool Road, Ashfield. Police will allege the woman was wanted in connection with further stealing offences and subsequently charged with a total of 47 offences and refused bail to appear before Burwood Local Court on Friday 28 August 2026.

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds. If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.
