Celebrating our peer educators ๐ŸŽ‰

When Scott Smith joined Inner Sydney Voiceโ€™s peer educator training, he was going through hard times. He had been a project coordinator in his fatherโ€™s landscaping business, but the death of both his parents left him grieving, unemployed and in need of public housing.

Scott saw our call-out on Eventbrite for volunteer digital mentors. He had noticed many people around him struggling with technology and wanted to help more. Being a part of the programme has given his confidence and communication skills a big boost and he also became a part of our vaccination education project.

Four weeks ago, he started a part-time role as Programme Coordinator with Manly Salvos, a direct result of the skills and experience he gained as a peer educator. He says he still โ€œpinches himselfโ€ about the new job and his move into the community sector. His own experience of hard times, he says, helps him relate to the people he works with and motivates him to help others.

We had an incredible turn out yesterday for our karaoke event thrown to celebrate Get Online Week! ๐ŸŽถ

A huge thank you to all the residents who dropped into the Waterloo Neighbourhood Centre to sing their favourite song - it was so much fun! Some residents said it was the highlight of their week ๐Ÿ’œ

Of course, a massive thank you to our fabulous Digital Mentors Fiona and Maria, for being so welcoming, helping residents find their songs on YouTube in various languages and showing them everything else they can learn through the Be Connected website.

Shout out to Cass and Linda from Good Things Foundation Australia who visited and gave us some awesome resources, decorations and support.

We loved hearing from residents about the digital skills theyโ€™d like to learn next, so watch this space for potential future sessions!

๐Ÿ’‰ How does misinformation and health inequity affect our communityโ€™s immunisation rates?

For the 2026 Marg Barry Memorial Lecture, weโ€™re exploring how to navigate the changing vaccine landscape in our city. Thereโ€™ll be discussions on how misinformation and unequal access to trusted health information shape vaccination uptake and wellbeing in our communities, and what community-led responses can look like. Drawing on ISV's vaccination and misinformation workshops, the lecture asks how we can build trust by listening as much as informing.

The afternoon will include:
โ€ข Keynote lecture by Professor Julie Leask AO (University of Sydney), a leading researcher in vaccine communication
โ€ข A panel discussion with local and lived-experience voices
โ€ข Q&A and time to connect
Whether you've been part of Inner Sydney's community sector for decades or are new to it, you are welcome. Space is limited, so please register early.
