We’ve joined with other NSW not-for-profit early childhood providers to express our disappointment at the NSW Government for the $150 million funding cut to early education.

Over 170,000 children aged 3-4 years attend preschool, with 72% of them attending programs in long day care programs. While today’s announcement includes a much needed increase in funding for community preschools, this is much less than the $150 million cut to the long day care preschool programs attended by most children.

This means that for the majority of families, funding for high quality preschool that supports children’s development is being cut next year.

Raise awareness of the issue and share this message on your social channels, parent Whatsapp groups or other community pages.

Welcome to our new Chief Executive Officer Ben Keneally.

Ben is joining us at an exciting time as we continue to deliver and enhance the critical services we provide to people and communities to disrupt entrenched disadvantage.

Over the next few weeks, Ben will visit services across NSW and the ACT, talking to employees, clients and residents, to understand more about the important work we do each day.

We're delighted to have Ben join the Uniting team this week.

"The meaning of life is to love and be loved in return."

It's one of the most profound things Daniel Salazar has heard during his years supporting older people.

As a spiritual care practitioner at Uniting Nunyara, Daniel spends time listening to residents reflect on family, relationships and the people who have shaped their lives.

He says that when people know the end of life is near, their biggest concern is often not for themselves, but for the people they love. Will they be okay? Will they be looked after?

This Spiritual Care Week, we're sharing Daniel's story and the wisdom he's gained from being present for some of life's most important conversations.

This Mental Health Month, our counsellor Claudia provides tips for families on how to recognise and approach someone in your family that might be struggling with emotional distress, mental health concerns, life transitions or challenging circumstances.

Family members don’t need to have all the answers. Often, the most valuable things we can offer are a safe space, a willingness to listen, and support to access further help when needed. Here’s how you can talk to teenagers, young children and older people in your life about how they’re feeling.

These conversations help to open the door and professional help is out there when you need it. Uniting is there to help you at every stage of your life on your mental health journey.

We see the difference that safe, high-quality pre-schooling makes for children in long day care every day. It’s where they learn, play and get ready for school. But from the start of 2027, the NSW Government is cutting its entire $150 million program funding for children attending preschool in long day care.

This is money that goes towards quality learning resources, training for educators and excursions. The cut will directly hit the 2 in 3 NSW families who need to access preschool in long day care. For many families it’s just not possible to work around the 9-3pm schedule of public preschools.

At Uniting, we believe every child should have access to high-quality early learning, regardless of where they attend preschool.

If you think this is important, you can help by sending a letter to NSW Premier Chris Minns asking him to reverse the cut.

We heard what leaders and changemakers from the Pacific regions think about the impact of climate change on their island nations. We heard how passionately they want the world to come together on climate change. We heard how they want Australia to partner with their closest neighbours in solidarity.

They told us at the recent Pre-COP gathering in Fiji. We were lucky to attend Pre-COP and now we will be working with the Uniting Church and the Pacific community ahead of COP31 in Turkiye.

This National Carers Week, we recognise and celebrate the more than 3 million Australians who care for a family member or friend. While this is important unpaid work that makes a big impact, we also know that many carers face burnout and failing mental health.

Being a carer is challenging work, so it’s important for carers to take steps to look after their mental health and wellbeing. Bec is a senior Local Area Coordinator who works with carers of people with disability. She’s got some amazing advice for carers on how to stay well and avoid burnout.

This week, take the time to thank someone you know who is a carer and offer help where you can. ❤️❤️❤️

Exams are important, but so is mental health.

Our clinicians have some useful advice for young people doing their exams on how to cope with stress and maintain good mental health. These tips cover common things like getting good sleep and taking breaks, but there’s also strategies if you start to feel panicky ahead of a big exam.

Yas and Jeremy are from Parramatta Headspace, a service delivered by Uniting. They work every day with young people aged 12 – 25 who are experiencing mental health challenges. Uniting is here to support you with your mental health at each step of your life journey. Always reach out if you need support.

Share this with a young person in your life who may benefit from these tips.

Why is Uniting and the Uniting Church attending Pre-COP?

At Uniting, we aim to create a better future for families and communities by tackling entrenched disadvantage, and central to how we do that is through climate justice. We know that climate change affects people inequitably and we stand together with those people most at risk.

Core to the Uniting Church's values is the belief that humanity has a shared responsibility to care for and protect the natural world. At Pre-COP, the Uniting Church stand with the Pacific community and advocate for those that will be most affected.

We're there to listen and advocate where needed.
