River Red Gum. The ecology of river red gums also plays a crucial role in their response to bushfire. River red gums have evolved to cope with fire through a variety of adaptations. Their thick bark can help protect them from intense heat, and their ability to resprout from epicormic buds allows them to regenerate after Fire.
However, intense or frequent fires can have negative impacts on river red gum populations, especially if they occur before the trees have had a chance to reach reproductive maturity. Climate change is also increasing the frequency and severity of bushfires, posing a significant threat to river red gums and the ecosystems they support.
