This week we celebrated International Day of Play!
Protect play, protect childhood!
Here are 5 ways to honour nature play across Greater Sydney Parklands:
1. Make time - protect everyday unstructured play. Let kids be kids, every day.
2. Playful places - choose spaces that invite climbing, balancing, hiding, creating, discovering and imagining.
3. Nature first - let green spaces lead the play. Loose parts, natural textures, and sensory-rich moments do the work.
4. Include teens - play doesn’t stop at childhood. Young people (12-18) need time and space to move, create, connect and unwind.
5. Share stewardship - look after the parks that look after us. Volunteer, pick up litter, and learn from the plants and wildlife around you.
What’s your favourite way to play in the parklands? 🌿
Celebrate play with us this week - find a nearby green space, bring someone along, and get outdoors.

Tucked inside Centennial Parklands is Lachlan Swamp, a natural spring that’s been supporting wildlife in Sydney for thousands of years.
Rainwater filters through the sandy soil and sandstone beneath the Botany Sands, creating a rare wetland habitat right in the middle of the city. It’s why this pocket of the park is home to more wildlife than you might expect, including:
🌙 Tawny frogmouths aren’t owls at all: they rely on near-perfect camouflage, freezing in place to look exactly like a tree branch.
🪶 Kookaburras use their loud “laugh” to mark territory and communicate with family groups living around the swamp.
🦜 Sulphur-crested cockatoos are highly intelligent and social, often seen observing tree hollows or foraging on the ground.
🐾 Brushtail possums nest in tree hollows and become active at night, quietly moving through the canopy.
🦇 Grey-headed flying foxes roost in large colonies nearby and play a vital role in pollinating and spreading seeds across the park.
🦉 Powerful owls are apex night predators and rely on healthy bushland habitat like this to survive.

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re proud to be ‘All In’ for reconciliation.
At Greater Sydney Parklands, we embed reconciliation in our everyday work - partnering with First Nations businesses and communities to create meaningful programs and experiences that honour and nurture their enduring connection to Country as the Traditional Custodians of the lands, waters and skies.
Together, we’re listening, learning and taking action toward a more inclusive future.
