🔘 DOUBLE DEMERITS FROM MIDNIGHT
- STATEWIDE

- Posted: 6:52pm, Thursday 1 October

NSW Police Force have one clear message for drivers taking to the roads this Labour Day long weekend: Focus on what you are doing when you get behind the wheel. Momentary inattention whilst driving a vehicle can result in a crash.

Operation Labour Day 2026 commences at 12.01am on Friday 2 October 2026 and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 5 October 2026.

Officers will target the major contributors to road trauma, including drink and drug driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding, and seatbelt and helmet offences, with double demerits for certain offences in place for the duration of the operation.

Operation Labour Day will be led by officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, supported by general duties and specialist police from commands and districts across the state.

Additionally, with the NRL Grand Final set to take place at Accor Stadium on Sunday (4 October 2026), NSW Police will deploy officers to manage crowds, direct traffic, and monitor anti-social behaviour or alcohol-related incidents around venues and entertainment precincts.

Obtaining a permit is only one part of the process. If you are planning to undertake a burn, please follow these important steps:

Before applying for a permit, confirm your burn can be undertaken safely and legally by assessing the burn, surrounding fuels, weather conditions, available equipment, and site-specific risks.

During the Bush Fire Danger Period, a valid Fire Permit is required before lighting your burn.
Apply online at: https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp

Once suitable conditions have been identified and you intend to proceed, you must provide at least 24 hours' notice before lighting your burn.

You are required to:

27/09/2026

The Bush Fire Danger Period for our area will commence as of the 1st of October. There is a heightened risk of destructive bush and/or grass fire this year due a predicted hotter and dryer Spring and Summer.
From the commencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period, permits are required for any and all outdoor burning activities with the exception only for BBQs/campfires. You can apply for a fire permit this year by clicking the link on the home page of the RFS website or here; https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp.
Please include as much detail as possible and current photos in your submission. A successful submission of your application DOES NOT mean it has been automatically approved, your application will be assessed and either approved or declined over the following 72hrs. A property visit by one of our RFS appointed permit officers may be required in some instances.
Permits may be declined if;
-Not urgent in nature.
-The proposed burn is not to the standards as prescribed in the attached guidelines; https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/.../Standards-for-Pile-Burning...
-Prevailing environment, fuel and weather conditions.
Ample notice must be provided when requesting a permit. To light a fire in the bush danger period without a permit is illegal and may incur penalties and prosecution.
Permits are automatically suspended for fire danger ratings of “High” or higher.
No fires of any nature or the use of any sparking equipment and machinery is permitted during a Total Fire Ban.
Any burning activity prior to the 1st of October, must still be registered with Fire Control via; https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire.../BFDP/burn-notifications or ph 62263100.
It is vital that you, your family and your home are prepared for this year’s bushfire season. Understanding your risk and doing simple actions such as Reducing, Removing and/or Relocating combustible materials from around your home is a great place to start and a great way to protect your home from ember attack. It is also essential that you have a clear plan in place for what actions you and everyone else in the household will take in the event of a bush or grass fire. Only if your home has a properly prepared Asset Protection Zone and you are properly equipped, should your plan be to stay and defend.
In the event of a fire starting on an Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger day, the only option is to leave and leave early. Have a backup plan also, for example, what if it’s too late to leave? Actions need to be prompt and immediate; there can be no “wait and see”.
