A Total Fire Ban is in place today, Monday 12 October 2026, for the Greater Sydney area with forecast Extreme fire danger and the Greater Hunter area with forecast High fire danger. Warm and windy conditions are forecast across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.

Take action now. Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

For more information on Total Fire Ban rules, visit the website:

Outside of Total Fire Ban days, Solid Fuel and Park Fire Bans may be declared in NSW State Forests and NSW National Parks where the potential risk to visitors from fire is high.

Crews today assisted with a small hazard reduction burn at Belrose.

During the operation, embers ignited a small area outside the containment lines, resulting in a minor extension of the burn. Crews quickly responded and brought the area under control.

While this was a small incident and was quickly resolved, it demonstrates how quickly conditions are drying out and how the fire risk is increasing.

It’s another reminder of the importance of being prepared as we head further into the warmer months. Now is the time to make sure your property is prepared, you know what you’ll do if a fire threatens, and you’re staying informed about conditions in your area.

There’s only a tiny bit of smoke coming from the hazard reduction burn now, but we could still see some smoke impacts around Terrey Hills tonight.

And don’t put the jumpers away just yet! 🥶 A cold and blustery change heading our way on Wednesday which will help clear out the remaining smoke but you might need to light the fire inside again!

Hazard reduction – Mount Murray Anderson

The hazard reduction burn in the Ku-ring-gai National Park, north of Terrey Hills and Duffys Forest is continuing today.

Fire activity has increased, and smoke is now more visible as firefighters undertake aerial ignition, slowly lighting sections of the burn down towards Smiths Creek.

The 330-hectare burn is being carefully managed by firefighters, with weather and conditions continually monitored.

If you are affected by smoke, stay indoors where possible, close windows and doors, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions should take extra care and follow their health management plans.

This is an important hazard reduction burn for the Northern Beaches, with the area forming part of a traditional fire path.

Further hazard reduction burns are programmed over the coming days.

👉 Check the NSW Rural Fire Service website for the latest information and updates.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service together with NSW Rural Fire Service crews will be conducting a hazard reduction burn of approximately 337 hectares in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, in Duffys Forest to reduce the bushfire hazard to the surrounding areas.

🗓️ Dates: Saturday 12th, Sunday 13th, Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th September 2026 (this date is weather dependent, and the hazard reduction burn may be held anytime within the next 21 days subject to suitable conditions).

The burn is expected to run over 2-4 days, followed by patrols for consecutive days to ensure the fire is extinguished and hazards are removed. It is normal for fire and smoke to be visible during this period as larger fuels burn out.

📍 Location: The burn area is bounded by the Perimeter Trail, Long Trail, Wilkins Trail and Smiths Creek.

Closures:
• Perimeter Trail between Cullamine Trail and Smiths Creek West Trail
• Smith’s Creek West Trail
• Wilkins Trail
• Long Trail
• Cowan Trail
• Echunga Trail

Trails will remain closed for several days after the burn until assessed as safe.

Drivers and cyclists are advised to take care as there may be reduced visibility due to smoke. People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to take necessary precautions and stay indoors where possible if in a smoke affected area.
