A huge thank you to those volunteered their time over the past couple of Saturdays to help count containers at our TSC Containers for Change Depot! πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ’ͺ🏽

The program has been such a tremendous success that our TSC COEX staff has struggled to keep up with demand! The good news is our fantastic volunteers were able to count over 51,000 containers, giving our full-time team a much-needed boost and helping get things back on track. πŸ₯€β™»οΈ

Your time, teamwork and community spirit make a real difference. Thank you for stepping up and supporting this successful local initiative! πŸ’šπŸ’™

⚠️ PUBLIC NOTICE
HORN ISLAND – SEWER PUMP STATION FAILURE
Precautionary Advice – Horn Island Jetty

Torres Shire Council advises the community of a sewer pump station failure on Horn Island that has resulted in a wastewater overflow into the sea.

The incident occurred when pipework at the Wongai Sewer Pump Station failed, causing the wet well to fill and subsequently overflow.

Council is working closely with the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) to address the incident and rectify the issue as quickly as possible.

🎣 Public Health Precaution

As a precautionary measure, the public is advised NOT to fish at the Horn Island Jetty until further notice.

Water samples are being collected today and will be sent to a laboratory in Cairns for testing to assess any potential impacts on water quality.

While the pump station is some distance from the jetty and the extent of any potential impact has not yet been established, Council is taking a precautionary approach until the test results are available.

πŸ”§ Rectification Works

A replacement pump was delivered on Sunday, and technicians are travelling to Horn Island to programme and commission the pump.

Council staff are working with relevant agencies and contractors to restore the pump station to normal operation as soon as possible.

πŸ“’ Further Updates

Council understands the importance of protecting public health and community safety and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

⚠️ Please do not fish at the Horn Island Jetty until further notice.

Further updates will be provided as water quality results and additional information become available.

Torres Shire Council thanks the community for its cooperation and understanding.
