G’day Toogoom, I’m just taking a few minutes to try and clarify why we have a brigade phone. I appreciate that people don’t want to be alarmist, but there are systems in place that deal with that.
We are a volunteer brigade and the roles we all hold are subject to a vote of members every two years - so it makes sense to keep a consistent number for contacting us. We expect that to be used by people wanting information, or HOPEFULLY wanting to join us - not for fire calls.
Our Fire trucks get deployed by FireCom, the triple zero call centre. Over the past 26 days, our members have spent 24 days involved in firefighting. Some of those days have been several hours travel away, calling the brigade phone for a fire in Toogoom is the absolutely wrong thing to do. As happened this week, we were deployed behind Imbil with other brigades and got a call to the brigade phone for a fire. The caller had a conversation with me, then had to call 000 and have a similar conversation before any activity by RFS.
If you are concerned about smoke, call 000.
If you are concerned about a fire, call 000.
If you see a fire in the bush, call 000.
If you see a fire in a paddock, call 000.
If you want information about the brigade, call 0407 644 735

On behalf of Toogoom RFS Brigade we give a huge shoutout to the Toogoom Beach Convenience and Takeaway Store for taking on board a large order to feed all brigades who were supporting us yesterday and last night. Numerous comments on the great food quality. We’re certainly fortunate to have this business available to us here.

This week is Get Ready Week and Queenslanders are being encouraged to prepare for extreme weather.

With a strong El Nino forecast for 2026, Queensland can expect predominantly dry conditions in the coming weeks and months.

These conditions can increase the risk of bushfire and create challenging conditions for firefighters across large parts of the state.

Get Ready Week serves as a timely reminder to make sure you and your family are prepared for whatever Queensland weather throws at you.

Take the time to review your Bushfire Survival Plan, check your emergency kit and make sure you know where to find the latest warnings and information.

Keep up to date with Get Ready Week by visiting Get Ready Queensland socials and website.

Today we had a local resident ring the brigade because they were concerned about someone preparing a fire on the beach. I’d just like to make a couple of points;
Our brigade members are 100% volunteers, unpaid and give up their time to deal with fire threats to our community.
Our brigade members are NOT police and have no power to enforce laws, and no protection if they try.
It is illegal to light a fire on property you don’t own or rent, and there are very expensive fines and potential jail time if you do.

School holidays are a time when we get an influx of visitors and an increase in frequency of people lighting fires on the Beach or foreshore. Please, if you’re talking to anyone and this subject comes up, convince them not to set and light any fire outside their property.

Let’s all of us enjoy Toogoom.

Greatly appreciated by all of us

Welcome rain in the local area has reduced, BUT NOT REMOVED concerns about fire conditions. Wind and fuel load remain our biggest threats, and the wind forecast is still in that dangerous area with fuel loads still high.

Please stay alert to anything that may start a grass or bushfire. Use care and don’t wait to call for help from 000.

Our crews are still helping out other Queenslanders on deployment both north and south. There are other local crews remaining in the area. But, we are already spread thin on the ground.

If you’re considering giving up some of your time to volunteer in your local brigade, do what we all did. Have a crack! Call our First Officer, Tim on 0407 644 735
