Help us preserve Queensland’s treasures for future generations.

Dr Espen Knutsen's treasure is this 100-million-year-old juvenile plesiosaur, discovered in western Queensland by the “Rock Chicks” - a fossil hunting family.

Now being carefully prepared at Queensland Museum, this rare fossil is helping unlock new clues about ancient marine life.

It might not look like a treasure in the traditional sense, but meet the giant isopod, the deep-sea scavenger that looks like it crawled straight out of a sci-fi movie 👀🌊

And it's Dr Marissa McNamara's favourite! This incredible specimen is part of Queensland Museum’s Crustacea Collection, helping researchers uncover the secrets of life in the deep sea.

Scientists have described two new species of cleaner wrasse - the iconic “doctors of the reef” 🐠🔬

Despite being one of the most studied fish on coral reefs, these charismatic reef cleaners were hiding in plain sight…including one species discovered living up to 145 metres deep in the reef twilight zone.

By combining fieldwork, museum collections and advanced DNA sequencing, researchers from Australian Museum, Queensland Museum and JCU: James Cook University, Australia uncovered these surprising new species.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we reflect on the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations, and acknowledge the ongoing journey of healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities.

Queensland Museum honours the stories and experiences of the Stolen Generations, recognises the enduring impacts of past policies and injustices, and celebrates the histories, cultures and voices of First Nations peoples.

Pictured is a Sorry Book from the Queensland Museum Collection, containing messages and signatures from community members who expressed their support for reconciliation and acknowledged the pain caused by colonisation and the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.

Our scientists, along with colleagues from the Australian Museum, have helped identify two new-to-science species of Cleaner Wrasse! 🐟 These "tiny doctors" of the reef remove parasites and debris from larger fish at underwater cleaning stations.

Using advanced DNA analysis and micro-CT scanning, Queensland Museum Principal Scientist and JCU: James Cook University, Australia Associate Professor Dr Peter Cowman and collaborators uncovered species hidden in plain sight including:

The Cinnabar Cleaner Wrasse (Named by school students!) and The Goldenrod Cleaner Wrasse, found living deep in the reef’s mysterious “Twilight Zone”.

It just shows that even some of the world's most studied reef fish can still surprise researchers!
