In December 2025, the community of Koolewong right here on the Central Coast was impacted by a devastating bushfire.

Residents Elise, Paul & Chui Yin share how they prepared ahead of the fire, the conversations they had with their families and the steps they took to get ready.

On a day of Extreme Fire Danger Rating, within just 20 minutes, 12 homes were destroyed with many more under imminent threat. By the end of the day, 16 homes would be lost and the community would be forever changed.

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

A busy day for the Tuggerah crews as well as many other Central Coast brigades & surrounding districts. Both Tuggerah 1 & Tuggerah Pumper worked throughout the day on the Bandaroo Road fire at Calga. A great effort from everyone on the fire ground resulting in containment of the fire.

The fire has burnt approximately 19 hectares and is now under control. The fire is currently at advice level.

We are still a few weeks out from the bushfire season on the central coast, this is a great time to ensure to have your bushfire survival plan ready for the upcoming season.
