Before modern machinery, haymaking was a long and labour-intensive process. Around 1904, this Massey Harris Reaper/Binder pictured at Lower Light, helped farmers harvest their crops by cutting, binding, and tying sheaves with twine before leaving them neatly in rows across the paddock.
The work didn't stop there. Farmers then stood the sheaves to dry before loading them onto horse-drawn wagons and building haystacks for winter feed.
Looking at this scene, it's easy to appreciate the hard work and endurance required to keep a farm running over a century ago.
