Today we remember Operation Jaywick, one of the most daring sabotage missions of the Second World War. In August 1943, eleven Australian and three British members of Z Special Unit departed Exmouth in Western Australia aboard the MV Krait, a 20-metre wooden boat. Commanded by Major Ivan Lyon, they travelled thousands of kilometres disguised as Malay fishermen to Subor Island, near Singapore.

On 26 September, six members of the team paddled into Singapore Harbour on collapsable canoes. They attached limpet mines to Japanese ships before paddling back to the Krait. When the mines exploded, seven ships were sunk or badly damaged.

All 14 servicemen survived the mission and made it safely back to Australia, arriving at Exmouth on 19 October.
