Tyringham RFS Brigade A NSW Rural Fire Service Brigade stationed on the inland mid-north coast of NSW.

Due to the dry conditions in the Clarence Valley and the unfavourable forecast for the coming months, Fire Permits are required from Saturday 1st August 2026. Permits are required until the end of the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) – generally through until 1st April 2027.

There are 2 ways to obtain a fire permit from the RFS:
1. You can apply for your fire permit online on the RFS website at https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp , (or search: "RFS fire permit") or,
2. You can contact one of our fire permit officers to get a paper permit.
We are encouraging people to use the online option if possible, to save everyone time and the double-handling of paper permits.

Applying for an online permit is quite simple. The only part of the process which can be a bit tricky is when you are asked: ‘What is the purpose of the burn?”, to make it easier just read through the following 4 points and pick which one applies to you:

1. If you are a farmer or working on a farm and want to burn grass for a fallow or burn grass for pasture regeneration, you need to select “Agriculture”, and then in the “Sub category” box, select “Pasture Regeneration” or "Crop Stubble". These permits can only be issued for up to 7 days.

2. If you are a farmer or working on a farm and want to burn piles of timber or vegetation, you need to select “Agriculture” and then in the “Sub category” box, scroll down and select the most appropriate reason (eg. Vegetation - Pile Burns or Vegetation -Windrows) from the various options. These permits can only be issued for up to 21 days.

3. If you are NOT a farmer and want to burn piles of timber or vegetation, you need to select “Other” and then in the “Sub category” box, scroll down and select the most appropriate reason for what you are doing from the various options. Again, these permits can only be issued for up to 21 days.

4. The “Hazard Reduction” option won’t apply to most landowners. However, if you intend to burn native vegetation for the purpose of either land clearing or to create a fire break, you must select the "Hazard Reduction" option. For this you will also need a Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Certificate (HRC), the forms for these are available on the RFS website at: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/publications/hazard-reduction. If you need advice or assistance completing the necessary paperwork for a Bush Fire HRC, please contact the helpful staff at the Clarence Valley Fire Control Centre on 02 66445135.

Please indicate clearly what you are planning to do in the section which asks: "Provide more information on what you plan to burn". If you provide a clear description of what you intend to do, this will generally remove the need for a site visit and will make it simpler and quicker for us to approve your application.

After you have lodged your online permit application, one of our permit officers will review it, and as with the traditional paper permits, they may contact you to ask for more information or visit the site of the proposed burn.

Your permit will be approved electronically by the permit officer and then a copy will be sent to you by email, please read and follow the conditions on the permit carefully.

Importantly, after your permit has been approved and issued, you must give at least 24 hours notice to all your neighbours and also notify the RFS at least 24 hours before you light any fires.

To notify the RFS, again go to: https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp (or search "Notify RFS") and fill in the simple “Notify us of your planned burn” form online. You can also call 02 6644 5127 to notify the RFS.

While we appreciate you letting us know, calling a member of the local brigade does not constitute notifying the RFS.

Remember to check your BOM Weather app for the forecast fire danger ratings (Moderate, High, Extreme or Catastrophic), and the forecast weather conditions generally for the upcoming days before you light up. Generally fire permits will be temporarily suspended when fire danger ratings are High or above. Please don't light up if it's not safe to do so. If the weather isn't right during the period of your permit, simply apply for another permit.

If you have any queries, please contact one of our local permit officers or the Clarence Valley RFS office on 02 6644 5135.

Congratulations, Pete Singleton!

Monday, 4th May was an important day for the RFS. St. Florian is known as the patron saint of Firefighters, and on his feast day we celebrate the courage, dedication and talents of firefighters everywhere.

In 2026 St Florian’s day was particularly special for Tyringham RFS, as our Senior Deputy Captain Peter Singleton recieved the Commissioner’s Commendation of Service at the awards held in Dubbo on Monday.

Pete joined us in 2017, and as well as being our Senior Deputy Captain, is also our Training officer, and is one of our permit officers. Further to this, Pete has been instrumental in reviving our sister brigade at Ebor, meaning communities to the south also can access our service in their time of need. Pete is also part of the Remote Area Firefighting Team (RAFT), which sees him deployed to rugged and isolated firegrounds where trucks can’t access - a specialised and intensive part of the RFS.

Thanks to his wide and varied commitments, Pete is a wealth of knowledge in the brigade, and is an instrumental part of our ability to attend to emergencies, and in many cases is the first or only one to show up.

Everyone who serves alongside Pete will know this accolade is incredibly well deserved, and Tyringham is proud to stand behind Pete as he receives this very special honour.

Congratulations Pete! We’re glad to have you as part of the brigade.

While the official Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) is over in the Clarence Valley Council area, there's still a few simple steps we need everyone to take to keep us all safe when conducting any pile burns or fallow burning on your property.

While you currently don't need a Fire Permit, you still must do all of the following 4 steps before you light up:

1. At least 24 hours before lighting a fire, you must notify the RFS. During the non-BFDP (which is generally March-August), you are now able to set your notification to apply for that entire period. You can do your notification by searching "Notify RFS" online and fill in the online form; or by clicking this link to: https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp..., or by calling (02) 6644 5127. **Please note: while we are happy to know what's going on, contacting a member of our brigade to advise them that you are burning does not constitute "notifying the RFS".

2. At least 24 hours before lighting a fire you must notify all your adjoining neighbours.

3. You must take all reasonable precautions to prevent the fire from escaping your property. Before lighting up you should:
a. check the current weather and the weather forecast is safe - the BOM Weather phone app is excellent and even gives you the forecast Fire Danger Ratings;
b. clear around the burn area; and
c. have sufficient people, equipment and water available to monitor and manage the fire.

4. If your fire gets out of control, please immediately call 000 and ask for Fire.

With the forecast hot & dry conditions for Spring/Summer, now is a great time to start tidying up around your place, clean out the gutters and start thinking about what you'll do if a bushfire threatens your home or farm.

The official Bush Fire Danger period will resume on 1st September 2026 (unless announced earlier by the NSW RFS), after which you also need a Permit to burn.

Many thanks to the brigades, locals and the brilliant chopper who helped us control and put out this fire behind Dundurrabin today.

This is a classic example of why we remind you to prepare your fire plan - this fire started after a tree fell on a live power line. Gusty winds and drying fuel meant this fire moved quickly - in this case, it could have threatened multiple homes in Dundurrabin village.

Today, that wasn't the case, thankfully - but it serves a sobering reminder not only that fire season is well underway, but fire can present itself at unexpected moments.

Fire danger ratings drop for the remainder of the week (with hopefully some rain) but all it takes is a bit of dry weather for the danger to increase again.
Remember your fire plan, you might need to use it tomorrow!

Our fire danger today is Extreme - this means that if a fire starts, it can become dangerous VERY quickly. Not a surprise after our string of drier weather and the winds around up here.

A total fire ban is in place in our area, which means no fires outside, at all.

Now's a great time to review your fire plan and decide what you'd do if a fire starts. If you're going to leave, the safest choice is to leave early. You can find resources about preparing for bushfire on the RFS website:
https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/bush-fire-survival-plan

A Total Fire Ban is now in force for the Far North Coast, North Coast, New England and Northern Slopes. Hot, dry and windy conditions are forecast today across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.

Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

For more information on Total Fire Ban rules, visit the website: https://brnw.ch/21wWWVo

Today's (6th Oct) Fire Danger Rating in the Clarence Valley Area is HIGH. Our neighbours in the North Coast area (Dorrigo/Bellingen/Coffs) are under a total fire ban with an EXTREME fire danger.

Fire activity has been increasing in our area over the past week or so and with warming temps and wind fires can easily get out of hand. Be aware of the conditions and remember to call 000 if you see an unattended fire.

To find out what area you fall under and more info on fire danger ratings, see https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans

Tomorrow (2/10/2025) is a High Fire Danger Day. Permits are suspended from midnight tonight.
High Fire Danger - Review your bush fire survival plan with your family. Keep yourself informed and monitor conditions. Be ready to act if necessary.

Fire Permits are now required from 1st October 2025. Permits are required until the end of the bush fire danger period – generally from now until 1st April next year.

There are 2 ways to obtain a fire permit from the RFS:

1. You can apply for your fire permit online on the RFS website at https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp , or,
2. You can contact one of our fire permit officers to get a paper permit - the process is the same as before.

We are encouraging people to use the online option if possible, to save everyone time and double-handling of paper permits. Lodging an online permit is quite simple and straightforward.

The only part of the process which can be a bit confusing is when you are asked: ‘What is the purpose of the burn?”, so to make it easy, follow these steps (this part has recently changed, but it's still pretty simple):

1. If you ARE a farmer or working on a farm and want to burn grass for a fallow or burn grass for pasture regeneration, you need to select “Agriculture”, and then in the “Sub category” box, select “Pasture regeneration”. These permits can only be issued for up to 7 days.

2. If you ARE a farmer or working on a farm and want to burn piles of timber or vegetation, you need to select “Agriculture” and then in the “Sub category” box, scroll down and select the most appropriate reason (eg. Vegetation - Pile Burns) from the various options.

4. The “Hazard Reduction” option generally won’t apply to most private landowners.

Please indicate clearly what you are planning to do in the section which asks: "Provide more information on what you are planning to burn". If you upload photos of the area you intend to burn, and/or provide a clear description of what you intend to do, this will generally remove the need for a site visit and will make it simpler and quicker for us to approve.

After you have lodged your online permit request, one of our permit officers will review it, and as with the traditional paper permit, may contact you to ask for more information or to visit the site of the proposed burn.

Your permit will be approved electronically by the permit officer and then a copy will be sent to you by email, please read and follow the conditions on the permit carefully.

Importantly, after your permit has been approved and issued, you also then need to give 24 hours notice to all your neighbours and the RFS before you light any fires.

To notify the RFS, again go to https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp and fill in the simple “Notify us of your planned burn” form. You can also call 02 6644 5127 to notify the RFS.

Remember to check your BOM Weather app for the forecast fire danger ratings (Moderate, High, Extreme or Catastrophic), and the forecast weather conditions generally for the upcoming days before you light up. Generally fire permits will be suspended when fire danger ratings are High or above.

If in doubt, don't light it up. If the weather isn't suitable to burn during the period of your permit, simply apply for another permit. Please don't burn if it's not safe to do so.

From time to time, permits may be suspended temporarily by the RFS due to adverse weather conditions, please do not light any fires during this time.

If you have any other queries, please contact one of our local permit officers or the Clarence Valley District RFS office on 02 6644 5135.
