✨ The benefits of reading for mental health ✨

From reducing stress, to getting a better night’s sleep, reading for pleasure has proven benefits for mental health and wellbeing. 🧠

If you've been in a reading rut or haven't picked up a book in a while, here are some top tips for rediscovering the joy of reading!

🔸 Take the pressure off

Ease yourself in and read things that are enjoyable and engaging to you, rather than books you think you ‘should’ read.

🔸 Try out different formats

Audiobooks are a great way of listening to books on the go. eBooks include functionality that can make reading easier on the eye. Graphic novels and comics are a great way to engage with books and stories.

🔸 Plan regular time for reading

Think about when reading might fit into your life: before bed, with your morning coffee, or while commuting to work, and schedule regular reading time for yourself.

🔸 Browse your local library

Borrowing multiple books from the library is a free and easy way to trial a range of books, and see what takes your fancy.

🔸 Join a book club

Book clubs are a fun and social way to get into reading. You may want to join an existing book club through friends, community groups, or your local library – or start your own!

🔸 Read together

Reading with children before bed, listening to audiobooks on family road trips, and reading aloud to older relatives are great ways to enjoy quality time together.

✨️ October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! ✨️

Did you know that your library has dyslexic print books in our children's, youth, and adult collections? 📚️

These books use a font designed to alleviate some of the difficulties typically reported by readers with dyslexia, such as swapping or flipping letters and skipping lines without noticing.

To find a dyslexic print book in the collection, look for a white dot on the spine of the book. Or you can head to our website or library app and search for 'dyslexic books' - https://www.crl.nsw.gov.au/

✨ Library Books ✨

For so many readers and writers, the library was where it all began. In their own books, acclaimed writers Susan Orlean (The Library Book) and Pip Williams (The Dictionary of Lost Words, The Bookbinder of Jericho) herald the noble library and its precious collection of books, ideas, words and stories.

In this special conversation, Susan and Pip discuss what libraries mean to them, sharing personal reflections and exploring how libraries nurture readers, writers and communities. In conversation with host Phillipa McGuinness.
