More housing - productivity with livability.

SHLGA has made a submission to the Productivity Commission’s Housing Supply Regulation review, highlighting what housing reform needs to consider for fast-growing regional and peri-urban communities.

The Southern and Hills region is projected to grow by more than 87,000 people by 2051, requiring around 46,000 additional homes over the next 30 years.
Our submission supports reforms that help deliver more homes in the right places, while making the case for community-ready growth.

That means:
- coordinating housing with roads, transport, water, wastewater, stormwater and community infrastructure
- better visibility of State Government and utility infrastructure plans
- State and Commonwealth co-investment in infrastructure needed ahead of growth
- protecting tree canopy, open space, accessibility, environmental values and good design as communities grow.

Housing supply is critical. But the measure of successful growth should also be whether we create well-connected, resilient and liveable communities that retain the qualities people love about the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island.

Healthy communities are built locally.

Across the Southern and Hills region, our six councils are doing important work every day to support healthier, safer, connected and more resilient communities.

Our latest Regional Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2024–26 Summary Report captures just some of that work – from accessible public spaces, recreation and active travel, to community connection, environmental health, emergency preparedness, climate resilience and programs supporting children, young people and older residents.

A big thank you to the staff across Adelaide Hills Council, Alexandrina Council, Kangaroo Island Council, Mount Barker District Council, City of Victor Harbor, and District Council of Yankalilla who deliver this work in their communities.

Thank you to everyone involved in turning our regional public health priorities into practical action for our communities.

Today I met with the Hon Rhiannon Pearce MP, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Sport and Recreation.
Together with SHLGA Executive Officer Lisa Teburea we discussed the importance of Council working together across regions, and the importance of Council and State Government collaboration.
I look forward to working with her in the future. We also talked about the Victor Harbour Sport and Recreation Precinct and she appeared to be very supportive of infrastructure that supports our growing community. It is great to have a minister for Local Government who is so supportive of councils and the work that we do. Because she comes from a rural background herself, she understands the need of rural and regional communities.
I look forward to further collaboration and partnerships.

This is an opportunity to contribute to strong governance, financial management and risk oversight at Council.
