We’re expecting damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall on Sunday as severe storms move across the state.

Storms are expected to develop across western NSW on Sunday morning and move east towards Sydney during the afternoon.

Further storms could affect Sydney overnight on Sunday and into Monday, before the severe weather risk shifts to the northeast coast where heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding next week.

Make sure you’re prepared and stay ahead of the storm.

🔸Tie down loose items in your yard
🔸Park undercover and away from trees or powerlines
🔸Clear your gutters of debris🔸Keep clear of creeks and storm drains

📲 Ensure you monitor the Hazards Near Me app to stay across warnings.

🚫 If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route. Flash flooding is dangerous and unpredictable.

☎️If you need assistance, call us on 132 500. If life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000).

Walgett Shire Council advises residents and visitors that the E. coli water quality alert for Lightning Ridge remains in place.

Unfortunately, E. coli was detected again in this week's water testing results.

Two consecutive weeks of clear test results are required before the current alert can be lifted.

We understand this is frustrating for the community and appreciate everyone's patience while water quality monitoring continues.

⚠️ Please continue to follow the existing water safety advice and precautions until Council confirms the alert has been lifted.

Council will provide further updates as testing results become available.

Detection of E. coli bacteria mean that the water in the Lightning Ridge is unsafe.

E. coli in drinking water shows that the water may be contaminated with faeces and organisms that may cause gastrointestinal illness.
Water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil to make it safe. Kettles with automatic shut off switches can do this. Water should then be allowed to cool and stored in a clean container with a lid and refrigerated.

Everyone, particularly people caring for young children, should be careful to avoid scalding, when you are heating and then cooling the water.

Bottled water or cool boiled water should be used for drinking, washing uncooked food (for example, salad vegetables and fruit), making ice, cleaning teeth, gargling and pet’s drinking water.
Dishes should be washed in hot soapy water or in a dishwasher.

Children should take bottled water or cool boiled water to school.
Tap water is safe for bathing. There is a potential risk if water is swallowed during washing and bathing. Parents and carers could consider a sponge bath for children as an alternative.

Walgett Shire Council is working to fix the problem.

This advice should be followed until further notice.

Update 23 October 2026 at 3:00pm - Pool has been cleaned and is now open.

🏊 CARINDA POOL – TEMPORARY CLOSURE TODAY

Carinda Swimming Pool will be closed today, Friday 23 October, to allow Council staff to undertake additional cleaning after dirt was deliberately thrown into the pool.

Unfortunately, this has become a recurring issue.

We want to remind everyone that incidents like this have consequences beyond the pool itself. Each time this occurs, Council’s Urban Services staff must be diverted from other important maintenance and community services across Carinda to clean up the mess.

This is an unnecessary use of Council resources and impacts the services we can deliver to the wider community.

We ask everyone to please respect our community facilities. These spaces are provided for the enjoyment of residents and families, and keeping them clean and operational is everyone’s responsibility.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank the Carinda community for their understanding.

Walgett Shire Council advises residents that the informal access track (slip road) connecting Rubbish Tip Road and Bate Street will be permanently closed from Monday 26 October 2026.

The closure is required to secure the site of Council's new waste facilities.

Concrete barriers will be installed on Monday 26 October, followed by fencing on Tuesday 27 October.

Once the barriers are installed, access through this track will no longer be available.

Council thanks residents for their understanding and cooperation.
