FIRE PERMITS SUSPENDED – Sunday 20th September 2026
The Shoalhaven is forecast to experience HIGH fire danger conditions on Sunday 20th September 2026. As a result, all fire permits issued by the RFS have been suspended in the Shoalhaven for this time.
These conditions can create a real fire risk across our landscape. It's incumbent upon all of us to be cautious with the use of fire.
ONE EMBER CAN END IT - Embers from a fire can spread quickly and quite a distance, putting communities well away from the main fire at risk.

Bush Fire Danger Period commencing 1 September. đź“…

The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) will commence in the Shoalhaven on Tuesday 1 September. From this date, anyone planning to conduct a pile burn or other permitted burn will need to ensure they have the appropriate Fire Permit before lighting.

A permit is only one part of the process. If you're planning a burn, remember:

âś… CHECK - Make sure your proposed burn meets the requirements for a safe and lawful burn. Check your pile, surrounding vegetation, available equipment, and other requirements before applying.

📝 PERMIT - During the Bush Fire Danger Period, obtain the required Fire Permit online here https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp before lighting your burn

📢 NOTIFY - Once you've identified suitable conditions and intend to proceed, you must provide at least 24 hours' notice before lighting:

Notify the NSW RFS online at https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp
Notify all adjoining neighbours of your intention to burn.

🔥 BURN SAFELY - Continue to monitor weather and fire conditions right up until you light.

Having a permit does not mean you should proceed if conditions are no longer suitable. These requirements help ensure proposed burns can be appropriately assessed, planned burns are recorded before ignition, neighbours know that smoke or fire may be visible.

There is plenty of information available on the NSW RFS website about Fire Permits, notification requirements, pile burn standards and preparing for a safe burn. Visit rfs.nsw.gov.au for more information.

A little planning before you light goes a long way towards keeping our Shoalhaven communities safe.

🔥 Something new has arrived at Wandandian RFS! 🚒

We’re excited to now have a Bushfire Model to help our members train, learn and prepare for the challenges of bushfires.

Used by brigades, trainers and fire agencies across Australia, the model provides a hands-on way to explore fire behaviour, suppression tactics, safety and decision-making through realistic scenarios.

This hands-on training tool lets us create realistic scenarios, explore how fire behaves across different terrain, and work through decisions and tactics together.

From new members learning the basics to experienced firefighters sharing their knowledge, the model will be a valuable addition to our brigade training, and we are looking forward to sharing it with other Shoalhaven RFS Brigades.

It’s all about building skills, sharing experience and being better prepared to protect our community. 💪🔥

We’re looking forward to putting it to work!

Tonight, the Wandandian RFS responded to a reported structure fire in Sussex Inlet, alongside crews from Sussex Inlet and St Georges Basin RFS.

As it turned out, the fire started in a shed belonging to our illustrious Group 4 Leader, Dennis Stannard and thankfully spotted and called in to 000 by a neighbour. True to form, Dennis acted quickly and managed to remove the burning material from the shed before it could develop into a major incident.

There was some discussion about Dennis’s choice of firefighting PPE… while he may not have been dressed for the occasion, he was at least wearing his RFS-issued boots!

Fortunately, he was more than happy to step aside and let the appropriately attired firefighters finish the job.

A great outcome, with no injuries and only minor damage. Well done to all crews for their prompt response and teamwork—and perhaps a timely reminder that even firefighters can have a fire at home!

This morning, members of NSW RFS - Wandandian, joined NSW Rural Fire Service Basin View Brigade, NSW RFS - Vincentia Brigade, NSW Rural Fire Service St Georges Basin Brigade, NSW RFS - Tomerong, & Huskisson Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade to undertake hydrant booster system training.

The session provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen operational skills, share knowledge across brigades, and enhance our collective capability to respond effectively when called upon.

A special thank you to NSW Rural Fire Service Basin View Brigade for hosting the training and providing a very welcome BBQ on a cool, wet morning. Thanks also to Tommy for delivering the training and sharing his knowledge and experience with all those in attendance.

Working together and training together helps ensure we remain prepared to protect our communities. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to a successful morning of learning and collaboration.

Following the training, NSW RFS – Wandandian Brigade assisted a local resident by conducting a small pile burn and removing a dead tree that had the potential to become a safety hazard. These community assistance activities are an important part of what we do, helping residents reduce risks on their properties while strengthening community resilience.
