Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group OUR VISION
See the impact of priority pests reduced to a minimal or acceptable level. The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group formed in 2014.

This came after a public meeting where frustrations and concerns were raised about escalating numbers of w**ds and feral animals. The group is a not-for-profit organisation. It’s committee is comprised of community and local government representatives from Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Murray, Waroona, Harvey and Mandurah. It also welcomes membership from any person who owns land or manages property within these areas. The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group values the support of the WA State Government, with formal recognition by the Minister for Agriculture and Food coming in late 2017. It also receives ongoing support from the Department of Primary Industries and Rural Development, the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council, and local organisations such as Landcare SJ and the Waroona Landcare Centre.

🐇 Planning on controlling rabbits this summer? Don't forget the fence!

🌱 Install your fence before starting rabbit control to help prevent rabbits from moving back into the area as you reduce their numbers. A well-built fence can help protect crops, pastures and native vegetation from reinvasion.
🔧 Make sure your fence is properly constructed, with suitable mesh and no gaps underneath, and regularly check it for damage.
💡 Remember: fencing works best alongside other control methods as part of an integrated rabbit management program — no control method works well in isolation.

Summer is a great time to control rabbits. Get in touch if you've got questions or want to know what equipment you can borrow from us:

Do you have a fox problem? If you pay the Declared Pest Rate and live in Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group's operational area, you're eligible to borrow one of our cage traps. The traps are easy to use and we'll talk you through how to run a fox trapping program if you're not sure how best to go about it.

The stunning arum lily is a beautiful sight, but there are calls for an all-out war on the imported flower infesting swathes of forest.

Another inpromptu guide to w**ds - this is watsonia, often mixed up with showy gladiolis. Watsonia isn't very toxic but it spreads fast and forms dense patches of vegetation that makes great shelter for rabbits (and bushfire fuel as well). It also spreads FAST. Get rid of it if it's on your property and ask at your local native nursery what you could replace it with.

Do you know what this w**d is?

It's blue lupin (Lupinus cosentinii) and it's a serious environmental w**d in WA for two reasons: 1) it's a big fire risk, with dried out plants fueling bushfires in summer and 2) it fixes nitrogen. That means it changes soil conditions to something most of our native plants don't like grow in.

So in addition being a fire hazard, lupins also damage native ecosystems like our increasingly rare banksia woodlands (which are an essential food source for threatened black cockatoos)!

Lupins are easily pulled up by hand, and it's best to get to them before they flower - you can add these to your compost heap or dig them into your vegie patch.

Wood movement restrictions are still in effect to protect our trees from the PSHB. Please stay mindful when shifting green waste, plants and untreated wood.

Help protect WA’s trees, food and agriculture from polyphagous shot-hole borer 🪲

The borer doesn’t move far on its own but can spread through human movement 🛻

Don’t move untreated wood, green waste and plants outside of the Perth metro area 🪵

The other week, our Weeds Officer went out to verify a report of a Paterson's Curse infestation - and as you can see, the report was definitely correct!

Paterson's Curse may be pretty but it is a declared w**d (meaning State law requires landholders to get rid of it) due to its toxicity and fast spread. This w**d poses a serious health risk to grazing animals as well as local biodiversity.

We all need to work together to have effective, landscape-scale protection of our unique native ecosystems and vital agriculture industry. Please manage w**ds on your property and report local infestations on private land to us (form here: https://www.phbg.org/w**ds) or to DPIRD: https://www.dpird.wa.gov.au/online-tools/mypestguide/mypestguide-reporter/.
