Weave Youth & Community Services Weave began in 1976, when a group of local Aboriginal women in Redfern/Waterloo advocated for services, activities and support for local young people.

Weave Youth & Community Services is a place-based, community-centred organisation located on unceded Gadigal and Bidjigal Lands in Sydney, with a deep and long-standing commitment to the people and communities we work with. Our diverse range of programs have been designed to help tackle issues related to poverty, homelessness, domestic violence and abuse, mental health, alcohol and drug misuse, family breakdown, relationship issues, discrimination and the impacts of intergenerational trauma and significant social and systemic disadvantage. Our sites are located on Gadigal and Bidjigal Land with offices in Waterloo, Woolloomooloo and Malabar, Sydney. www.weave.org.au

As we celebrate 50 Years of Weave in 2026, we are sharing stories and moments that highlight the impact of Weave’s work.

This year also represents a significant milestone for Siobhan Bryson, Weave’s CEO, who marks 25 years of service with the organisation this year.

Siobhan started working at Weave in 2001 when it was known as South Sydney Youth Services. Initially working as a Caseworker/ Counsellor for 7 years, providing holistic support for Aboriginal young people and their families, Siobhan then moved into the Operations Manager role for 10 years and became CEO in 2018.

“As someone who has been involved with Weave for 25 years, I have seen first hand the deep, intergenerational connections and impact of the work. As a place-based and grassroots community organisation, all roles at Weave including the CEO have strong connection and interaction with clients and community every day, which is something I love about working at Weave.

Over the past 25 years I have had the privilege of witnessing the transformative change that has been made possible through genuine relationships, consistency and continuing to show up alongside people and communities to support individual and collective wellbeing and healing.

A passion for social justice and equity is in my DNA, and I strongly believe that the work Weave does advances both.”

In 1976, South Sydney Youth Services was established by a group of local residents in Redfern/Waterloo who advocated for services, activities and support for local young people.

In 2011, the organisation undertook a widespread client, community, staff and stakeholder consultation to come up with a new name and “Weave Youth & Community Services” emerged as the new name, representing the range of programs and services supporting children, young people, women and families and the way that clients and community members are able to weave in and out of support as they need it.

As we celebrate 50 Years of Weave this year, we acknowledge the generations of people, families and communities who have made the organisation what it is today.

You can support our work at Weave by making a one-off or monthly donation. We are so grateful to our community of supporters who are a vital and valued part of Weave's impact.

Weave’s Driving Change Program supports people who face multiple barriers to gaining their driving licence.

The program provides support through all stages of the licensing journey, including obtaining ID and clearing fines, one-on-one support with online test practice and supervised driving lessons to complete log-book hours. Gaining a driver’s licence opens up employment, educational and social opportunities and has a profound impact on the lives of people accessing this program.

From the beginning, genuine connection has been central to everything we do at Weave. For 50 years - guided by the people we support - Weave has helped create meaningful spaces for people to connect, collaborate, and learn from one another.

The Weave Kitchen is a women's cooking program where food becomes a way to share stories, culture, build new skills and connect with one another.
Held every second Friday in the beautiful Juanita Nielsen Community Centre kitchen in Woolloomooloo, each session is led by a different woman connected to Weave, who is paid to teach a favourite recipe while sharing the memories, traditions and experiences behind it.

Together, the group explores affordable, nutritious meals in a lively, welcoming space filled with laughter, conversation and delicious smells. Participants take home meals each week to feed their entire households.
More than a cooking program, it has become a place where women have formed friendships and celebrate the knowledge that already exists within their community.
