“Just make it safe.”

That’s the motto of a part of Loddon Shire Council that the public doesn’t always get to see, and when they do they often misunderstand their role.

Darren Hunt and Peter Bewley are Council’s Surveillance Officers, responsible for ensuring our vast road and other infrastructure network is maintained in line with Council’s adopted Road Management Plan.

Darren and Peter speak about their role in this video, but a reminder too that they get a lot of queries about roads which are not Council managed – for these Department of Transport and Planning (VicRoads) roads, the public should call 13 11 70 or visit https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/traffic-and-road-use/report-a-road-issue to report an issue.

To find out if a road is managed by Council or DTP please visit https://www.loddon.vic.gov.au/Our-Services/Footpaths-roads-and-drains/Roads

Loddon Shire Fire Prevention Team will commence formal property inspections from late October (weather dependent).

Now it is time for all property owners or residents to maintain their properties now, cut and remove long grass, clear away rubbish, garden waste and remove any old furniture, mattresses or other unwanted items and support Council's efforts to keep Loddon Shire Fire Ready.

During an inspection if a property is found to pose a fire risk, Council may issue a Fire Prevention Notice. This notice will outline what actions need to be taken and a timeframe for works to be completed.

If a property owner does not carry out the works by the due date, Council then has the authority to engage contractors to complete the clean–up to remove the fire hazard. The cost of the work will then be charged to the property owner.

Council’s aim is to prevent fires, not to penalise residents, so everyone is encouraged to take action now to avoid receiving a notice.

We all have a role to play in fire prevention. Taking care of your property now, not only keeps your household safe, it also helps protect your community.

It is also a great time to make sure you are prepared for any type of Emergency

If you’ve been on the Laanecoorie walking trail recently, you might have noticed a couple of spots to have a break again.

Council recently installed two new seats, made from recycled plastic, to replace those that were stolen early last year.

We thank the community for their patience and hope you enjoy them.

Hundreds of visitors and community members turned out across the weekend to enjoy the 2026 Loddon Valley Arts Festival, with strong attendance at exhibitions, workshops, open studios, concerts and community events despite challenging weather conditions.

Now in its fourth year, the festival featured 45 events and exhibitions across more than 30 venues throughout Loddon Shire, showcasing the region's creative talent while attracting visitors from across Victoria.

Loddon Shire Mayor Dan Straub said the festival once again demonstrated the strength of the community and the growing reputation of the event.

“Even with less favourable weather across parts of the weekend, it was fantastic to see so many people out supporting artists, attending events and exploring our towns,” he said.
