If you’re travelling during the bush fire season, you could be affected by a fire. Bush and grass fires can impact roads and highways without warning. Smoke can reduce visibility, and roads may also be closed. Even after rain, it can take just a few days of hot, dry and windy weather for fire conditions to return.
Before and during your journey:
• Check the fire danger ratings for the areas you are travelling through.
• Ensure you have downloaded the Hazards Near Me NSW and Emergency+ apps. Stay up to date with current warnings and set up watch zones through the NSW RFS website or the Hazards Near Me NSW app.
• Have a Plan B in case you encounter road closures.
• Always carry extra water, a phone charger, and an emergency kit with your essential items.
• If conditions worsen, delay your travel or change your plans.
If you’re on the road and a fire starts nearby, NEVER drive into smoke or flames. Call 000 if you are in immediate danger.
Your safety always comes first.

If a bush fire started today, could you safely protect or move your livestock?
The best time to make a plan is before an emergency. Planning ahead can reduce stress and help protect your animals.
When preparing your plan, consider:
• Do you have enough feed, water and supplies for 3–7 days or longer?
• Is there a safe place on your property with multiple access routes?
• Are your livestock identifiable?
• Can you relocate them quickly, and do you have safe transport and backup options?
• Are your water supplies, shelters and infrastructure protected?
• Do you have basic medical supplies and rescue equipment?
• Can a neighbour or friend help if you’re away?
During a bush fire, the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Local Land Services support rural landholders by assisting with preparedness, coordinating animal rescue, evacuation and emergency care, assessing affected animals, and supporting recovery.

Planning for pets and animals is an important part of your household’s bush fire preparations, make sure you prepare the following:
Emergency kit:
• Food and water – At least three days’ worth of food and water.
• Any medication, records and first aid supplies
• Comfort and sanitation items – Bedding, blankets or favourite toys, plus cleaning and sanitation supplies.
Identification:
• Ensure your pet has identification, including a collar or tag, current registration and microchip detail. Pack a recent photograph, and copies of key veterinary and contact information.
Transport:
• Have everything you need to safely transport your pet ready to go, including a lead, harness or muzzle (where appropriate), and a suitable cage or carrier. Plan ahead for where your animals will stay, as some evacuation centres may not accept pets or larger animals. A little preparation now can make a big difference during an emergency.

Protect your pets by including them in your Bush Fire Plan. Don’t leave pet safety until the last minute and have a plan of where to go and how to get there.
To prepare your pet:
• Ensure your pet is Microchipped and your details are up-to-date on the NSW Pet Registry.
• Plan where your pets will go if you need to leave. Not all evacuation centres cater for pets.
• Prepare a ‘Grab and Go’ pet kit with food, water, a lead, a carrier, medication and bedding.
