Choosing whether your cat stays indoors or outdoors is a personal decision, and the good news is thereโs another option that can offer some of the benefits of both.
Indoor cats are often protected from risks like traffic, fights, parasites and disease, and many live longer as a result. Outdoor access, on the other hand, can give cats extra stimulation, exercise and opportunities to explore their surroundings. Both approaches have positives, and what works best can depend on your catโs personality, your home and your neighbourhood.
Many cat owners are now choosing a balanced approach that allows their cats to enjoy the outdoors safely. This can include:
- supervised time outside in the yard or on a balcony
- leash or harness training for short outdoor walks
- secure outdoor enclosures or โcatiosโ
- limited, structured outdoor time rather than free roaming
These options let cats experience fresh air, sunshine, sights and sounds, while helping reduce risks like wandering, injury, neighbour concerns and the chance of a cat being mistaken for a stray.
A middleโground approach can help keep cats closer to home, reduce nuisance complaints, and lower the likelihood of cats being impounded. It also gives owners more confidence that their cat is getting both stimulation and protection.
Thereโs no single right answer. What matters most is that your cat is safe, enriched and identifiable. Making sure your cat is microchipped and registered means if they do wander or are found roaming, they can be returned home quickly and avoid unnecessary impoundment.

Sheโs having the best time with her new doggy sibling, Sunny the Labrador, and her three human siblings โ plenty of companionship, playtime, and love all around!
Trix is embracing everything her new life has to offer, from visits to the dog park to fun days out at the beach. Itโs wonderful to hear that sheโs not only enjoying these adventures but also showing what a wellโbehaved and lovely girl she is.
A big thank you to Shelley and her family for opening their hearts and home to Trix and giving her such a happy, fulfilling life. Stories like this remind us exactly why we do what we do. ๐

Desexing your cat isnโt just about preventing surprise litters; it plays a big role in protecting your catโs health and reduces the number of unwanted kittens in the community.
Cats can breeding from as young as four months old, and things can escalate quickly. A healthy female cat can have 2โ3 litters in a year, with an average of 4โ6 kittens per litter. That means just one un-desexed cat can have as many as 18 kittens in one year!
Within a short time, this rapid cycle can contribute to:
- more kittens needing homes (there are already plenty looking for one)
- increased pressure on rescues and impounding services
- increased number of feral cats in the community
Desexing also helps reduce behaviours like roaming, fighting and loud calling, which can put cats at risk of injury and increase the chance of them being picked up or impounded.
Desexed cats are more likely to stay close to home, experience fewer health risks, and avoid unwanted litters, helping Council focus resources on reunification and care rather than managing overpopulation.
Desexing is a simple, proven step that makes a real difference for cats, owners and the wider community.

Itโs easy to assume a roaming cat is causing trouble, but in many cases, roaming alone doesnโt make a cat a nuisance. In NSW, cats are legally permitted to roam, and being seen outdoors isnโt a breach of the law. Many roaming cats are mistakenly identified as nuisance cats when theyโre simply exploring the neighbourhood.
Under the NSW Companion Animals Act, a cat is only considered a nuisance if it:
- persistently makes noise that disturbs others, or
- repeatedly damages property outside the home where itโs normally kept.
If youโre experiencing issues with a cat in your area, here are some practical, friendly steps that often make a big difference:
Most people genuinely want to do the right thing, and a simple conversation can help resolve concerns quickly.
Feeding encourages repeat visits and can create unintended behaviour issues.
Things like garden sprays, motionโactivated devices, or blocking access points can reduce visits without harming the cat.
If behaviour meets the legal definition of a nuisance and you have evidence; Council can investigate and may issue a Nuisance Cat Order if appropriate and potentially fines if the behaviour is not addressed.
Keeping your own cat microchipped and registered also helps ensure they can be returned home quickly if they wander, reducing stress for pet owners and neighbours alike.

Cats are curious by nature and may wander further from home than you would expect. Making sure your cat is microchipped and registered is one of the most important things you can do to help lost cats get home.
Under the Companion Animals Act 1998, cat owners are required to:
- microchip their cat from 12 weeks of age
- register their cat
- keep their contact details up to date
When a lost cat is found, vets, shelters and Council officers scan for a microchip and use the NSW Pet Registry to contact the owner. If thereโs no microchip, or the details havenโt been updated, it becomes much harder to reunite cats with their families.
Only a small proportion of cats impounded are microchipped, and many of those that have outโofโdate details. This means a cat might not be able to be returned home, even when they clearly have an owner.
Keeping your cat microchipped, registered and up to date:
- helps your cat get home faster
- reduces stress for you and your pet
- avoids fines
- helps prevent unnecessary impoundment
A quick check of your cat's microchip details today can make all the difference if your cat ever goes missing, contact Council on (02) 4227 7111 to carry out a check.
