The hold limit for physical items is reducing.
From 20 October 2026, the maximum number of holds that can be placed on physical items will change from 30 to 15.
What does this mean for me?
โข If you currently have fewer than 15 holds, no action is required.
โข If you currently have more than 15 holds, your existing holds will remain in place. You will not be able to place additional holds until your total number of holds falls below 15.
โข Suspended holds count towards the hold limit.
Why is this changing?
Many of the book holds placed across the LibrariesSA Network involve transportation of books to the library of the person requesting the holds. With rising costs of fuel increasing our transportation costs, reducing the hold limit helps manage these costs.
The change helps ensure holds are used for items people are actively waiting to borrow and supports the efficient management of the library network. The new limit of 15 holds still provides plenty of flexibility for the majority of customers.
Digital Collections
Don't forget that your library membership also gives you access to our digital collections through Libby and BorrowBox.
In addition to 15 physical holds, you can place up to 10 holds in Libby and 10 holds in BorrowBox, giving you additional ways to manage your reading and discover your next great book.
