If a bush fire started today, could you safely protect or move your livestock?
The best time to make a plan is before an emergency.

Planning ahead can reduce stress and help
protect your animals.
When preparing your plan, consider:
• Do you have enough feed, water and supplies for 3–7 days or longer?
• Is there a safe place on your property with multiple access routes?
• Are your livestock identifiable?
• Can you relocate them quickly, and do you have safe transport and backup options?
• Are your water supplies, shelters and infrastructure protected?
• Do you have basic medical supplies and rescue equipment?
• Can a neighbour or friend help if you’re away?
During a bush fire, the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Local
Land Services support rural landholders by assisting with preparedness, coordinating animal rescue,
evacuation and emergency care, assessing affected animals, and supporting recovery.

Preparation starts with you. When a bush fire threatens,
the decisions you make can save your life.
Firefighters will do everything they can to protect
communities, but they can’t be everywhere at once. There
is no guarantee a fire truck will be there when you need it.
That’s why it’s important to have a Bush Fire Survival Plan
and know what you’ll do before a fire starts.
Before the bush fire season:
• Discuss your Bush Fire Survival Plan with everyone in
your household.
• Prepare your home.
• Know the Bush Fire Alert Levels and when you need to
leave.
• Keep key information and important documents on hand.
The more prepared you are, the more options you’ll have
when conditions change.

You don’t need to have bush directly next to your property
to be at risk during a bush fire. Embers can travel long
distances quickly and start a fire. Recent wet weather has
encouraged bush growth and made it harder to manage.
Even if you can’t see the bush make sure you stay well
prepared before and during the bush fire danger period.

Yet another fire call close to home as Yarramalong Rural Fire Brigade, along with our neighbouring brigades, worked together to contain a 10 hectare fire at Mangrove Mountain
yesterday.

It's another reminder, before the official start of the fire season on October 1, that conditions this year put us at an increased risk of fire.

If you see smoke or fire,

In an emergency, every second counts.
Make sure your property entrance is clearly signed,
easy to identify from the road, and fitted with visible
property numbers at the main gate or fence line.
This is especially important in rural and semi-rural
areas where properties can be difficult to locate at
night, in smoke, or during fast moving bush fires.
Clear property identification helps firefighters
reach you faster when it matters most.
Take a few minutes to check your signage and
ensure your property can be easily identified in an
emergency. It could save valuable time when help is
on the way.

Could a fire truck access your home in an emergency?
When bush fires occur, firefighters need safe and reliable access to your property.
Truck sizes can vary, but a good consideration is our Cat 1 tanker which can be up to 7.8
metres long, 2.5 metres wide, and require a turning circle of approximately 22 metres.
Overgrown vegetation, narrow access tracks, low branches, soft ground, or locked gates
can delay emergency response and place crews at risk.
Inspect your property access before fire season and ensure emergency vehicles can enter
and exit safely. Good access helps firefighters protect your home, your family, and your
community.
The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends property access tracks and driveways have:
• A minimum width of 3.5 metres.
• A vertical clearance of 4 metres from overhanging branches or structures.
• Adequate turning space for large fire appliances.
• All weather surfaces capable of supporting heavy vehicles.
• Clearly accessible gates and entrances.
Clear access can help emergency services reach your property quickly when it matters.

For more info on how to prepare this your home pop by the station next Sunday Sept 20 on Get Ready Day Sunday September 20, 2026 and chat with your local volunteers.
