🚗🌧️ Drive to the conditions this long weekend - a message from NSW SES Yass Unit 🌧️🚗

Heading away this long weekend? Please take extra care on the roads and drive to the conditions. Weather can change quickly, and wet roads, reduced visibility, fallen branches, debris and localised flooding can make driving more dangerous. ⚠️

Before you leave:
✅ Check the forecast and current warnings
✅ Allow extra travel time
✅ Slow down in wet or windy conditions
✅ Turn your headlights on when visibility is reduced
✅ Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater
✅ Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front
✅ Make sure your phone is charged and someone knows your travel plans

If you come across water over the road, stop, turn around and find another way. It is never worth the risk. 🚧

For storm and flood emergency help, call NSW SES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency, call Triple Zero (000). 🚨

From all of us at NSW SES Yass Unit - travel safely, look out for one another, and enjoy the long weekend. 🧡

Volunteering, reimagined. 🧡

The NSW SES has reshaped what volunteering looks like - with flexible pathways designed to fit around your life, not the other way around. Whether you're mechanically minded, a people person, or great in a crisis, there's a place for you on the team.

As a Unit Volunteer, you'll gain nationally recognised qualifications, learn genuinely useful new skills, and work alongside a crew that becomes like a second family. In return for your time, you'll walk away with a fresh perspective and a real sense of what it means to show up for your community.

If you've been thinking about it, this is your sign.

🧡 Become a Unit Volunteer today. Head to ses.nsw.gov.au or reach out to the Yass unit to find out more.

📞 In an emergency, call 132 500. For life-threatening situations, always call 000.

When your roof's damaged in a storm, who do you call? 🏠⛈️

Our SES volunteers are trained to get up on that roof and make it safe again - temporary tarping, securing, and stabilising storm-damaged homes so families can get back to normal sooner. It's hands-on work, and it takes a team you can rely on.

That team could include you. We're always looking for people ready to step up and join our orange army of storm volunteers. Full training is provided, no experience required - just a willingness to lend a hand when your community needs it.

🧡 Step up. Volunteer with the NSW SES. Head to ses.nsw.gov.au or get in touch with the Yass unit to find out more.

I’D LOVE TO JOIN SES… BUT…
We hear it all the time.
🗣️ “I’m a parent.”
💼 “I work full-time.”
✈️ “I work away.”
🌙 “I work shifts.”
🌴 “I’m retired.”
😅 “Life is just really busy.”

And you know what?
So are our volunteers 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

Our members have jobs, families, commitments, hobbies and busy lives outside of SES.

We don’t all have the same schedules.
We don’t all have the same availability.
And we definitely don’t all have endless free time.
That’s the point!

VOLUNTEERING DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN PUTTING YOUR LIFE ON HOLD.
You give what you can. 🤲
You learn new skills. 🧠
You meet great people. 🤝
You become part of a team. 🧡

So if you’ve been thinking:
🤔 “I’D LOVE TO JOIN SES… BUT…”
Maybe your "BUT" isn’t a reason not to join.

Fit For Role — Yass SES crews put to the test 💪

Today our Yass unit teamed up with Goulburn SES for a Fit For Role Assessment, putting members' strength, stamina and balance through their paces.

The assessment isn't just a tick-box exercise - it's about making sure every member can safely handle real rescue equipment in real conditions. Crews held commonly used gear like chainsaws and combination rescue tools at waist, chest and knee height, holding steady while demonstrating the control needed out on a job.

It's this kind of ongoing training that keeps our volunteers ready to respond when the community needs them most.

Great effort from everyone involved today - thanks to Goulburn SES for joining us, and to every Yass member who put in the work.

Interested in joining the team? Head to ses.nsw.gov.au to find out more.
