Walking beneath the ancient River Red Gums at Cummins Reserve in the Yea Wetlands is like stepping back in time. There’s something so grounding about the old giants that surround the Yea Wetlands. Their ancient hollows and fallen timber aren’t just scenery—they are vital lifelines keeping our local wildlife, from possums to bats and water birds, safe and sound. Take a slow stroll, look up, and let nature do its thing. 🌿🐨
Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre and Visitor Information Centre is open 10-4pm daily, enjoy our walks, bird watching, picnic tables, retail delights, bbq, toilets and nearby dump point. Entry is free although donations are always welcome to help our Friends of Yea Wetlands look after the environment.

Carl the cockatoo flew into town last Friday landing at the Wetlands with a screech and a square and. Funny hairdo for one ‘lucky’ participant. This was the second and last of our school holiday author visits and was led by Carl the Cockatoo’s author Chris Brennan together with Friends of Yea Wetlands. Another fun day!

FROG FUN – Wednesday 30 September
Draw a frog, make a frog finger puppet, get your frogs talking (and making frog noises!) – then head outside to explore the wetlands and investigate our very own frog pond.

Join author and frog scientist Teisha Sloane-Lay and scientist and illustrator Katie Howard for a fun, hands-on morning inspired by their book Litoria and Her Wetland Friends.

COCKATOO ADVENTURE – Friday 2 October
Can you talk like a cockatoo? Walk like a cockatoo?

Join Yea writer and wetlands volunteer Christopher Brennan for an interactive adventure inspired by his book Carl the Cockatoo and the Magic Seed Bell.

• Treasure hunt
• Cockatoo activities
• Wetland exploring
• Colouring activities

🕐 1.00–2.30 pm
👧 Ages 4–9

Both activities are designed to get kids creating, moving, exploring and having fun – with a nature fidget tray available too for children who find sitting still a challenge.

It was great to hear the Yea Wetlands a buzz with excitement last week as hundreds of students from local Primary schools converged to share knowledge and connect with environmental experts and native wildlife as part of Kids Teaching Kids program.
Students spend a school term learning about a chosen topic and then spend 40minutes sharing their knowledge and presenting interactive workshops, games, performing plays and take part in activities like making seed bombs, weavings or searching for water bugs. (pictured).
Lots of work and what a great success to all those involved.

The Yea Wetlands are open every day and can be accessed via Cummins Reserve or the Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre 2 Hood St Yea. The Centre is open from 10-4 daily. There are two fun school-holiday adventures coming up at Yea Wetlands – this one is all about cockatoos, with a separate froggy adventure on Wednesday 30 September.

Join Yea writer and wetlands volunteer Christopher Brennan for a fun, interactive adventure inspired by his book 'Carl the Cockatoo and the Magic Seed Bell'. What is Carl the Cockatoo up to now?

There’ll be:
▶ A reading of Carl the Cockatoo and the Magic Seed Bell
▶ Talk like a cockatoo and walk like a cockatoo!
▶ Discover what cockatoos need to thrive
▶ Set off on a treasure hunt through the wetlands
▶ Look and listen for evidence of cockatoos
▶ Colouring activities for children who prefer to stay indoors

And for children who find sitting still a challenge, we’ll also have a nature fidget tray available.
