Media Release: Community invited to honour Sgt Henry (Harry) Smith M.M. at Young tribute unveiling

The Hilltops community is invited to come together to honour the remarkable life and legacy of Sergeant Henry (Harry) Smith M.M. at the unveiling of a special tribute plaque at Carrington Park (6 Ripon Street), Young, on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, from 11.00 am.

The ceremony will recognise Harry’s extraordinary contribution to the Young community, where he dedicated more than four decades of his life to the care, development and transformation of Carrington Park.

Joining Young Municipal Council in 1909, Harry began his role as park caretaker in 1912. Through his dedication and hard work, he transformed the grounds into the much-loved community asset residents enjoy today, laying lawns, creating flower beds, nurturing gardens and overseeing improvements to the park’s facilities.

His life was also marked by sporting achievements and remarkable courage. A champion cyclist and accomplished boxer, Harry enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in January 1916 and served on the Western Front in France during World War I. Despite being wounded by a shell explosion and suffering the effects of gas, he demonstrated great bravery and was awarded the Military Medal (M.M.) for his actions.

After returning to Young, Harry resumed his role at Carrington Park, continuing his dedicated service until his retirement in 1951, after 42 years with Council.

The unveiling of the tribute plaque will provide an opportunity for family and community members to gather, reflect on Harry’s remarkable life and acknowledge his lasting legacy at Carrington Park and throughout the wider community. The ceremony will take place at the location marked by the red circle in the image below, and all community members and family are warmly invited to attend.
