Improving community resilience through cooperative livelihood actions - ICRA

Almost all the members of Surma and Kajal Self-help Group (SGH) at Hnila Union of Teknaf Upazila have been producing various products after receiving training in handicrafts and receiving cash under ICRA project. These products include Nakshi Katha, Wooden Show-Piece, Hand Fan, Yarn Hat (Prayer Tupi) etc. Usually the entrepreneurs sell these products at lower prices in the local market. A notable product among them is the hand-knitted hat (Prayer Tupi) they produce in abundance. These products are marketed through Matchmaking Workshops to connect these entrepreneurs with district, national and international level traders and various government and non-government service providers.

As a result, now the entrepreneurs have been able to establish relationships with national, international markets, traders and service providers through regular communication. In its continuation, 13 entrepreneurs of Surma and Kajal SHG of Hnila Union (Monowara, Monowara-2, Khurshida, Khadija Begum, Hosneyara Begum, Sanjida Akhtar, Amina, Shamsunnahar, Tayyaba, Ayesha Siddiqua, Anwara Begum, Nur Nahar, and Halima) gains the ability to produce high quality hat (Prayer Tupi) through advanced level skill development training in hat (Prayer Tupi) making. Currently they are able to have an idea about the market, and able to do buyer dealing as well.

On 28th of April 2021, the 13 entrepreneurs were able to sell 220 pieces of hats (Prayer Tupi) at a higher price by negotiating with the hat (Prayer Tupi) trader Mr. Sekab Uddin (supplier in the international market) where they used to sell a hat (Prayer Tupi) starting from BDT 26 to a maximum of BDT 34 to the buyer, the price of each hat (Prayer Tupi) has been fixed at BDT 40 to sell. These hat (Prayer Tupi) are supposed to export to the Middle East. And with this, the products of the entrepreneurs started selling regularly in the national and international markets.

By the way, these products produced by the entrepreneurs of the and come to the Barapara Bohumukhi Women Business Center established by nine women entrepreneurs (Shubharani Das, Sumita Das, Lakshi Das, Pompi Das, Ratna Das, Manibashi Das, Dulali Das, Shyamoli Das, Haridashi Das) benefiting from the ICRA project. From the business center, buyers from local and distant markets buy it.

Special Note: It costs BDT 12 to make 1 hat (Prayer Tupi), selling price BDT 40. Entrepreneurs get BDT 39, and the Women's Business Center gets BDT 1. Its an approach of value chain amongst the self-help groups (SGHs) within the community which has been ensured through community engagement angle.
