ASHIC Foundation for Childhood Cancer and Palliatiive care in Bangladesh.

ASHIC, A Foundation for Childhood Cancer, is a beacon of hope that arose from tremendous tragedy for the Choudhury family. The organization was founded in 1994 after the Choudhurys lost their son, Ashiq, to a rare form of cancer. Ashiq was a vibrant, beautiful child whose promise of a rich life came to a premature end at the tender age of three. On May 20th, 1993, Ashiq slipped into eternal peace after a year-long fight against the death grip of cancer, leaving his loved ones lost in their own bleak worlds. Ashiq's sudden diagnosis and prolonged treatment with numerous courses of chemotherapy and surgery at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London brought a calamity into his family's life. During her son's treatment, Salma Choudhury came across many other families in similar situations. She also experienced the benevolence of individuals and charity organizations who offered comfort to these children and their families during their darkest days. After the loss of Ashiq, the Choudhury family was inspired to reach out to the children living with cancer in Bangladesh. They transformed their thoughts into reality through founding ASHIC (A Shelter for Helpless Ill Children), a charity organization dedicated to improving the quality of lives for this special group of children.

The two types of childhood cancers with the highest incidence in Bangladesh are Leukemia and Retinoblastoma.

Diagnosis, treatment, and after-treatment support has come a long way in the last three decades but there is still a long way to go. Nutrition, emotional and mental support/remediation during and after treatment, rehabilitation services, education and social re-integration are all important aspects of total cancer care.

ASHIC continues its quest in enriching these services.

Early diagnosis can vastly improve the chances to conquer childhood cancer. Yet, in Bangladesh, due to delays from many different reasons, the late diagnosis has a significantly negative impact on successful treatment.

Which is why, in conjunction with improving medical facilities and responsiveness, society at large must become better aware about early signs of cancer (please check earlier posts). Parents must learn to advocate for their child if symptoms persist, and find their way into treatment centers as soon as possible.

Low and middle income countries have a long way to go in having the infrastructure and support system required to conquer childhood cancer. Relying only on the government is insufficient. Service centric, private efforts - like those from ASHIC - are imperative in increasing the depth and breadth of services for these warriors.

While cure rates have improved for childhood cancer, the incidence is also rising due to various factors.

These children need incredible support and understanding from family, friends and broader society.
