Etiquette :: post 2

The concept of Etiquette and Manners is enshrined in the statement of the character moral perfect to sent been have I Indeed " وسلم عليه ّالل صلى Prophet traits." He showed what is good etiquette and what one should do with regards to knowledge. This was the reason for which all of the Islaamic teachings were revealed. That is the essence of Islaam. The proper etiquette is that we worship Him alone and that we follow all of Islaamic teachings that have been revealed.

The essence of Islaamic teachings is one of morality, the manner in which we conduct our life, with regards to Allah, human beings, and the Creation of Allah. The scholars identify what should be done in order to preserve the moral principles, and other things that should be maintained, governing that area.

In example, there are etiquette for the Muhaddithoon (scholars of hadeeth). When they sat in learning circles, they read back to their Shaykh, keeping record of what was recorded. This played a particular role in preserving the hadeeth literature. This was to ensure that false information was not conveyed inadvertently. If you found a hadeeth book, for example, you are not allowed to narrate it. Rather, you could only inform others that you found the book. So, the principles of copyright existed long before it was introduced in the West.

There are etiquette for the Qadhi (judge), or M***i that Do not judge between two persons when you are angry.

So who want just start learning Islam he also have some etiquette to follow. In the past, scholars used to dictate lessons to the seeker of knowledge. Some of the teachers in Masjid un Nabawi taught the book by Zarnoojee who was a scholar from 13 th century. The book was named, “Teaching the Learner the Way of Learning”. This was the popular book which used to be read before classes started, as a foundation for studying. They would read about how they would go about learning the goals of knowledge. For example, about how to deal with a teacher who makes mistake while narrating.

Now are starting the etiquette we need to follow.

1. Knowledge is Worship

The term knowledge is worship is taken from the fatwa of Ibn Taymiyyah. Prophet Muhammad pbuh has said: “For whoever Allah wishes good, he gives him the deep understanding (fiqh) of the religion”. This is found in Sahih Al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

also said “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim”.

Knowledge is worship, meaning that acquiring of knowledge is
worship. Because, the knowledge itself, in the Arabic statement, it is stated as “Al-Ilm, AlIbadah”. By translating, it is saying knowledge is worship.

I mean if we take a book containing knowledge, you know we have a textbook, is that, the book, worship? It is a means of worship, so it is acquiring knowledge that is worship. That is what they really meant when they use the phrase that knowledge is worship meaning to acquire knowledge one is engaged in worship.

So when one acquires knowledge, one is engaged in worship of Allah. Since acquiring knowledge is worship then there are standard conditions which are attached to worship which have to be fulfilled for worship to be valid.

condition, it is the sincerity and intention for Allah.

Shaykh Al Uthaymeen commented on this portion “If it is asked: what will give sincerity in seeking the knowledge? It will be through a number of things”. And, he listed four things -
The is to intend by it, the adherence to the commandments of Allah.
The is to intend by it the preservation of Allah’s Shariah. Because, Allah’s Shariah is preserved by learning it, by preserving it in the heart, and by writing it down and writing books about it. So, the second intention or element of intention for acquiring knowledge should be to preserve Allah’s Shariah.
The , it is to intend by it the protection and defense of the Shariah. The intention, is of defending the Shariah
from those who attack it .And should be defending the
Shariah with knowledge. Not by bombing here and there.
The point mentioned by Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen, was to intend by it to follow the Shariah of Prophet Muhammad -This can only be done when one learns the Shariah and is following the Shariah; meaning to apply it.

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen commented on this sin, and what he said is the correct protection from all these evil goals is correct.
"Whoever seeks the knowledge for pleasure other than Allah, will not even smell the Paradise."
May Allah protect us from that.

Author:
‘Hilyatul Taalibul Ilm’ or ‘Adornment of the Student of Knowledge’ translated into English as ‘Etiquettes of Seeking Knowledge’ By Bakr ibn Abdillaah Abu Zayd. Bakr Abu Zayd was born in 1944 into the Zayd tribe, in the middle of the Najd, the city of Shaqra, and died in Riyadh 2008. He completed Secondary Education and studied in Riyaadh. He then graduated from the College of Shari’ah at Ibn Saud University and also completed his Masters and PhD there in the Higher Instituteof Law.

He didn’t sit in classes, but studied personally under many leading scholars like Mohammed al Ameen Ashanqiti in Madeenah. He studied many books with him and read books back to him. Classical works in Arabic are read by students to teachers; they are given explanations, and questions are asked by them. Hence, a teacher gives the student an ijaazah, the permission to transmit the text. He also studied under Shaykh Ibn Baaz as well. He completed his BA as an external student and his PhD was done externally as well. He was given the post of Judge and was appointed as a member of the Supreme Court and Council of Senior Scholars, and elected as a Representative of the International Assembly of Islamic law and made its' President. He has authored 66 books.

Introduction:

The introduction refers to the period of late seventies or early eighties in which a huge revolution took place. The first incident during that time was the Iranian Revolution, Khomeini coming to power after overthrowing the Shah. A huge change took place in Shia Islam. It was not permissible for a rulership or government to exist in Shiism, until the Mahdi had appeared. They had left the affairs of government to whoever took reigns of the government. However, Khomeini developed a new philosophy which is called the ‘Wilaytaul Faqeeh’ or ‘Guardianship of Scholars,’ and developed a rationale for theocracy, where the state was overseen by the leading scholars of the Muslim world, but actually it was leading scholars of Iran.

Khomeini promoted it as Islaamic revolution and not as Shiite revolution, though the reality was something else. His intent was to open up the hearts of people to accept his views.

The Muslims of that time were electrified by the idea that an Islaamic state could come into being. A revolution of this scale was not considered likely. This was trigger to other movements in other parts of world and founded the basement of modern extremist activities:

- 1980 Makkan Incident- Seizure of The Ka’bah, 1980
- Coup d' etat in Egypt, 1981
- Revolt in Syria and Syrian Killing at Ham by Hafeth Assad, 1982
- Bombing of the US Embassy at Beirut, 1983

All of these incidents related to the Islaamic movement with a violent expression. This is what Bakr Abu Zayd is referring to, the need for controlling and supervising this awareness which was taking place in the Muslim world. There were those who were hijacking it and directing it into lines which were not Islaamic. And what took place had its precedence from the Khawarij.

Bakr Abu Zayd wrote a thesis on taa’alum, those people who were misguiding the movement out of ignorance. The basic reason was that seeing people excited in the '80s, everyone wanted to be part of the movement, without having real knowledge and only emotionally driven. This also we can see today in a very big scale all over the world.

Purpose of this study:
Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes in his book:
"To guide those who are seeking knowledge but who are following the wrong people and approaching the knowledge in an incorrect way. A scholar makes a mistake and because of that people reject all his work. If we only follow the infallible, then we have to follow the Prophet (Salla Allaahu Alayhe wa Sallam) who was infallible in the religious perspective. Even Abu Bakr and other righteous caliphs would also make mistakes. We overlook the mistakes of Scholars, Tabieen and great Imaams. Imaam Maalik was asked, “If one follows a sahaabi and everything he does, will he be on correct path. To which imam Maalik replied, No! unless the sahaabi could have been on the correct path; it is not enough that he is a sahaabi and follow him in his mistakes. The leading Imaams made statements like these, not to follow anyone blindly. Imaam Shaafie and Imaam Maalik said, “If the hadeeth is authentic then that is truly my mathhab.” "

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd went on to discuss why it is important to take into account the events taking place during the time, which were happening repeatedly. It was a time that the Muslim world was looking for change. People and were keen on studying and knowing the religion, but there were people who were promoting distorted understandings of Islaam and deviation from what had been taught to be the path of the earlier generation.
