At the Policy and Advocacy Side Event of the International Maternal New-Born Health Conference 2026 in Nairobi, PPD Executive Director Professor Joseph Adelegan delivered a compelling closing address, challenging global leaders to move from dialogue to decisive action. Addressing ministers, parliamentarians, and development partners, he laid out a stark reality: nearly 287,000 women die annually from preventable pregnancy-related causes, 2.3 million newborns die within their first month of life, and a US$20-25 billion annual financing gap continues to cost lives. "The future of maternal, new-born, and child health will not be determined by what we say. It will be determined by what we do," he declared. Professor Adelegan called for three transformative pillars strengthened domestic resource mobilization, innovative and catalytic financing, and South-South and Triangular Cooperation positioning PPD as a key enabler of country-led solutions across the Global South. The time for action is now.
