MSB was established in 1988 in Chittagong by Marie Stopes International (MSI) with a modest clinic financed by the UK’s then Overseas Development Administration (now known as DFID, UKAid) Joint Funding Scheme. It is to be mentioned that besides Bangladesh, MSI also works in 42 countries all over the world to serve millions of the world's poorest and most vulnerable women to provide them with quality family planning and reproductive healthcare. In Bangladesh, though Marie Stopes has started to work with one clinic in Chittagong, soon they have started to establish new clinics in different places realizing the need and demand of the community. Eventually, MSB established a head office in Dhaka, and invested substantially in developing and expanding the team and significantly expand service delivery network. Simultaneously, it also extended the range of reproductive health services provided in its clinics, including the management of sexually transmitted infections – an area in which our expertise is ranked very highly in Bangladesh. Apart from the direct service delivery through its 141 clinics, 536 outreach service delivery points and 30 project offices in 64 districts of Bangladesh. Presently, MSB works with around 2,173 full time staff members and around 4,225 volunteers all over Bangladesh. MSB also initiated capacity building and awareness building among vulnerable and marginalized groups of society. One of the major achievements that MSB has got in 2005 is- it became the first health service providing NGO in Bangladesh. Marie Stopes’s work underpinned by o passionate commitment to save and improve women’s lives, especially for the families living in extreme poverty, where a small initiative can change life and death issue. They trust MSB’s work as they put their clients’ interests first. Some of the services that they provide are- family planning, safe MR, post-MR care, maternal and child health care, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS prevention. Marie Stopes Bangladesh seeks to exceed the expectations of clients and partners for quality, cost-effective SRH and PHC services, reach out to the poor and extreme poor and vulnerable through participative behavior change communication and outreach service delivery, and build effective partnership for SRH and SRH rights with NGOs, GoB and civil society. MSB strongly believes in organizational sustainability, and is working relentlessly to establish a sound institutional base. Ultimately, MSB measures its success by the women and men it helps, and the sustainable impact it makes on the lives of the people it serves.
