Don’t Belittle the Acting Profession

Actress Sadia Jahan Prova has spoken out in defence of the acting profession following recent comments by performers who have chosen to leave the industry. In a Facebook post, Prova said people should not feel ashamed of an identity that has brought them respect, recognition, financial support and the love of audiences.

She said many people work in the arts with education, dignity and commitment, while acting remains an important source of income and identity for many. According to Prova, those who no longer wish to work in the industry are free to leave, but they should not belittle those who continue their careers in the arts.

Prova also stressed that people entering the cultural sector should have education, values and respect for art. She argued that artistic work should not be portrayed as something shameful or sinful.

Prova began her career in modelling in 2005 before becoming a familiar face on television. She has also worked in films and said some work on her latest project remains unfinished.

I want to keep acting as long as I breathe

For celebrated Bangladeshi actor Zahid Hasan, turning 60 is less about looking back at the passage of time and more about looking ahead.

The popular actor celebrated his 60th birthday on October 4, marking another milestone in a career spanning decades across television and cinema. Since rising to prominence in the 1990s, Zahid has remained a familiar and beloved presence on screen, winning audiences with performances that have resonated across generations.

Despite reaching a significant milestone, the actor says his passion for acting remains unchanged. His priority, he says, is to continue working while maintaining the quality that has defined his career.

“I want to keep acting as long as I can breathe. I want to maintain the quality of my work. The quality of the work is what matters most,” Zahid said.

Zahid earned his first National Film Award for his performance in “Srabon Megher Din”, and later received the prestigious award two more times. He also won widespread appreciation for his role in “Utshob,” further strengthening his connection with audiences from different walks of life.

Weavers and the human cost of Tangail tant

Zaidur Rahman, a Liaison Officer working with the weaving sector, describes a production system in which many marginal weavers lack sufficient capital to operate independently.

They need money before a saree can even be woven: to buy yarn, prepare the loom, pay for production and support the household while waiting for the finished fabric to be sold.

Government-backed loans are available to some weavers, but the amount may not always cover their needs. As a result, some turn simultaneously to institutional loans and traditional mahajans.

The mahajan is a complicated figure in this economy. He can provide capital, yarn, designs, orders and, crucially, a route to market. But financial dependence can also mean the weaver has little bargaining power over the price of his labour.

Rahman explains that some mahajans finance production on the condition that the finished cloth is supplied back to them at predetermined rates. For a cash-strapped weaver, refusing may not be realistic.
