Did You Know?
How do FM-200, Novec 1230 and CO₂ act in fire extinguishing?
Many people believe that FM-200 and Novec work like CO2, through the process of muffling.
But this is not true!
In fact, according to NFPA 2001 - Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems:
FM-200 (Heptafluoropropane)
It acts predominantly by inhibiting the chemical chain reaction, that is, it interferes with the free radicals responsible for the propagation of flames. It also has an endothermic effect (heat absorption), contributing to thermal suppression It can be used in normally occupied areas, as long as the maximum allowed concentration (NOAEL) is respected.
Novec 1230 (FK-5-1-12)
According to the same standard (NFPA 2001), it acts by removing heat with high efficiency, without significantly affecting the concentration of oxygen in the air.
It is classified as a clean agent, highly safe for use in busy environments, with one of the highest human safety margins among clean agents.
None of these agents pose a health risk when used in accordance with the design concentration established by NFPA 2001.

Are we allowed to connect the sprinkler head from any side of the branch pipe?
================================

The answer is yes, you can connect the sprinkler head to branch line pipe directly. As per the definition of branch line as per NFPA 13:

3.3.19 Branch Lines. The pipes supplying sprinklers, either directly or through sprigs, drops, return bends, or armovers.

It is saying directly, I've seen a lot of sprinklers connected through return bend when there is no need for that. When is the return bend mandatory?

First, let's clearly understand the meanings of these terms (sprigs, drops, return bends, or armovers). The best way to explain is through the attached photo:

1. Branch line as per the above definition.
2. Sprig: A pipe that rises vertically and supplies a single sprinkler. The important thing to know about the sprig is any sprig that is 4 ft (1.2 m) or longer shall be restrained against lateral movement.
3. Drop: Vertical pipe for 1 sprinkler from above. It’s clearly mentioned from above down to sprinkler.
4. Armover: The horizontal pipe that extends from a branch line to a single sprinkler.
5. Pipe Ni**le: The vertical pipe that is between a cross main and branch line.
6. Return Bend: Assembly including ni**le, armover, & drop.

When is the return bend mandatory? Using a return bend when not required wastes fittings and creates more friction loss for the pressure.

As per NFPA 13 - 16.3.11.1: Unless the requirements of 16.3.11.3, 16.3.11.4, or 16.3.11.5 are met, return bends shall be used where pendent sprinklers are supplied from a raw water source, a mill pond, or open-top reservoirs.

For the marine sprinkler system, the return bend is mandatory since you will be using seawater. NFPA 13 (2019): 30.4.8.1 To prevent sediment buildup, return bends shall be installed in all shipboard sprinkler systems where pendent-type or dry pendent-type sprinklers are used in wet systems.

So, only use a return bend when using a raw water source. Return bends are also useful where the centering of sprinklers in ceiling tile or exact positioning of sprinklers is desirable from an aesthetic or architectural viewpoint.

You are not allowed to use a return bend in deluge systems or when using dry pendent sprinklers.
