The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an intergovernmental regional organization comprising seven Member States lying in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. 𝗕𝗜𝗠𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗖 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗜𝗧𝗨-𝗗 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

BIMSTEC Secretariat has been admitted as a Sector Member of the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D), following approval by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council at its 2026 Session.

This milestone marks an important step in strengthening BIMSTEC’s engagement with ITU for advancing regional cooperation in ICT, artificial intelligence, digital connectivity, capacity building and telecommunications development.

Through its participation in ITU-D, BIMSTEC looks forward to closer collaboration with ITU and explore new opportunities for the Member States to benefit from ITU’s expertise, resources, programmes and activities.

The virtual Training Program on “Designing Interoperable Digital Government Services in South Asia” (1–18 May 2026), organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with BIMSTEC Secretariat and the Open Group, successfully concluded yesterday.

The Program brought together participants from five BIMSTEC Member States in South Asia and provided a valuable platform for advancing regional knowledge-sharing and capacity-building in the areas of digital transformation, interoperability, enterprise architecture, and citizen-centric digital public service delivery through GovStack and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

The BIMSTEC Secretariat conveys its sincere appreciation to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), The Open Group, distinguished speakers, facilitators, and all participants for their valuable contributions and active engagement throughout the Program.
