At the Trilochonpur union of Jhenaidah's Kaliganj Upazila, Nazrul Islam Ritu was elected as the first third gender Union Parishad chairperson. Nazrul Islam Ritu was born in a Muslim household. Later, as a child, she ran away from her rural Trilochanpur home and took shelter in a "Hijra" community in the Dhaka Demra area. She returned home in her late twenties and became a well-known figure in the community after assisting in the construction of two mosques and donating to several Hindu temples in the area.

In a statement, Ritu mentioned that she would work to eradicate corruption and eliminate the drug epidemic in her 40,000-person town.

Ritu further added, "Despite the fact that I was a marginalized member of society, the Union Parishad voted for me because they loved me. For this, I will be eternally thankful. I will devote myself to the people's welfare from now on."

Bangladesh's rising tolerance for sexual minorities' rights has culminated in a slew of new laws enacted under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Pinki Khatun, a transgender woman, has previously been chosen vice-chairman of Jhenaidah's Kotchandpur Upazila.

Shahida Begum was elected to Maguraghona Union Parishad-6 in Khulna district for the first time on November 13th.

A cabinet committee passed a policy in 2013 recognizing transgender people as citizens. The government published a gazette in January 2014 granting transgender people state recognition. In 2019, the Election Commission voted to include the third gender to the voter list as a gender identity. There are around 1.5 million transgender people in the country.

শত লাঞ্চনা,বুলিং ও আত্মহত্যা প্রচেষ্টাকে পেছনে ফেলে আসা বাংলাদেশের এই প্রথম ট্রান্সজেন্ডার সংবাদ পাঠক, যিনি এদেশের সকল ট্রান্সজেন্ডারদের সামনে এক অনন্য রোলমডেল।
তবে সে কে যে কিনা অদম্য উৎসাহ নিয়ে সমস্ত প্রতিকূলতা ও ভীতিকে কাটিয়ে সকলের তাক কেড়েছেন?
তিনিই তাশনুবা আনান শিরিন(২৯), যিনি স্বাধীনতার এই ৫০তম বছরে বৈশাখী টিভি কর্তৃক সংবাদ পাঠক হিসেবে নিয়োগপ্রাপ্ত হয়েছেন।৮ই মার্চ ২০২১।"আন্তর্জাতিক নারী দিবস" এর এই দিনে প্রথমবারের মতো বৈশাখী টিভিতে তাঁকে সংবাদ পাঠ করতে দেখা গিয়েছিলো।একইবছর তিনি দুইটা বাংলা ফিল্মের চরিত্র করার সুযোগ পান।
সংবাদ পাঠের পূর্বে তিনি অভিবাসী কর্মী উন্নয়ন প্রোগ্রাম "এ কেস ম্যানেজমেন্ট অফিসার রূপে কাজ করতেন।এছাড়া,অপর একটি সংস্থা " বন্ধু সোশাল ওয়েফার সোসাইটি" তেও তিনি প্রোজেক্ট অফিসার হিসেবে ছিলেন।স্বেচ্ছাসেবী হিসেবে কাজ করাও তার জন্য বিরল নয়।
মানুষটি একাধারে নৃত্যশিল্পী,মডেল ও কণ্ঠশিল্পী।২০০৭ সালে নাটুয়া থিয়েটার দলের মাধ্যমে তাঁর অভিনয় জীবন শুরু হয়।ঐটা বাদেও দুই বছরেরও বেশি সময় ধরে বোটেলা থিয়েটার গ্রুপের অংশ ছিলেন।সে সময় তিনি বেশ কয়টি প্রযোজনায় হাজির হন।
এতকিছু অর্জনের পেছনের কাহিনীটা কেমন ছিল?
শিরিনের জীবনের শুরুটা কখনোই সুন্দর ও স্বাভাবিক ছিল না।
পুরুষ বৈশিষ্ট্যের অধিকারী এ ট্রান্সজেন্ডার নারীর জন্ম বাগেরহাটের মোংলায়ে।ছেলেবেলায় নাম রাখা হয় কামাল হোসাইন।কিন্তু এ নামের সাথে নিজেকে বেশিদিন খাপ খাইয়ে নিতে পারেন নি শিরিন।৫/৬ বছর বয়স থেকে আস্তে আস্তে যখন তার 'মেয়েলি' স্বভাব প্রকাশ পেতে শুরু করে তখন থেকেই তার জীবনে বইতে থাকে লাঞ্চনা-উপহাসের স্ক্রিম-রোলার।হিজরা,হাফ লেডিস ইত্যাদি উপহাসিত নাম শুনতে হয় তাঁকে।
এ বুলিং যখন একপর্যায়ে অস্বস্তিকর হয়ে ওঠে তখন মাত্র ১৬ বছর বয়সে নিজ ঘর ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে আসেন তিনি।নারায়নগঞ্জ ও পরে ঢাকা শহরে একা একা থেকে নিজ উদ্দোগে পড়ালেখা চালিয়ে যান শিরিন।
তার স্বপ্ন তাঁর মতো হাজারো ট্রান্সজেন্ডার শিরিনের পাশে দাড়ানো।তিনি বলেন,"এখানে হাজারো শিরিন আছে যারা কেবল সুযোগের অপেক্ষায় বসে আছে।আশা করি এটা তাদের যাত্রাকে সহজতর করবে।"

তবে ভারত উপমহাদেশে তিনিই সর্বপ্রথম ট্রান্সজেন্ডার সংবাদ পাঠক নন।কেননা, তার পূর্বে ২০১৮ সালে পাকিস্তান তার প্রথম ট্রান্সজেন্ডার সংবাদ পাঠক দেখেছে ও ২০১৪ সালে ভারত, ভারত উপমহাদেশ ও তার নিজ দেশের সর্বপ্রথম ট্রান্সজেন্ডার সংবাদ পাঠক পেয়েছে।

The phenomenon
“Bangladesh gets its first, transgender news anchor, on Women's Day.”
This sentence made it to the headlines on both national as well as international platforms. And why the eyebrows were raised, expecting their question to be “Who?”, It was rather “How?!”. The occurrence was more questionable because, by many, it was an “accident” and not an “achievement”. We’re talking about Tashnuva Anan Shishir, who made her identity clear and confronted millions of eyes as the first openly transgender news anchor in Bangladesh’s history to deliver a 3-minute long news bulletin on 8th March, which is International Women’s Day.
Born in a conservative Muslim family living in Bangladesh, it was absurd to think out of the box of gender norms. In her early teen years, the realization that she was different from what she was assigned at birth, which is male, came like a blow out of nowhere. She kept wondering, “who am I?”,” Is there anyone like me?”. While living in a slum, fighting for each penny every day, she had to endure all those harassment and abuse, both physically and mentally, which came as a result of her acting and coming out as a different personality. Regardless of the constant bullying from friends, family, society, and every other soul, she accepted that even though she was born in the body of a male, she had a woman’s mind and soul. She made up her motto, “I have to prove that I exist in society!”.
Cutting all the knots with a family that considered her a disgrace, she fled from her house at the age of 15 and came to live at her uncle's house in Narayanganj, still disguising herself as a male. There she continued her study in order to make her dream come true.
Later she moved to Dhaka to complete her further studies. She started modeling, acting, dancing, social working, volunteering, and all that gave fulfillment towards her goal. Declaring herself as a transgender woman in 2015, she started taking hormones, growing hair, wearing makeup, and dressing like a woman.
Her struggles just had begun. Doctors would treat her as a person who is psychosocially disabled. From taking pills for the treatment she didn’t need to discriminations of all types, she had faced it all alone. She even attempted su***de four times. Rejection from every job she applied even though she was capable, was becoming unbearable to her.
After a lot of hesitation due to the fear of rejection, she finally applied to the private news channel “Boishakhi TV” as a news reporter. To her surprise, she got accepted! Her sufferings finally paid off.
This broke the ice. She proved that the thing that is considered impossible becomes possible when it is done. She is a role model to the people of her type who couldn't think of doing something so revolutionary. She is the living proof that with determination and capability, success is inevitable, it will come today or tomorrow. She is the reason to believe that BEING TRANS ISN’T A CHOICE BUT BEING JUDGEMENTAL, IS!
