The Economic Relations Division (ERD) of Bangladesh, under the Ministry of Finance, leads the mobilization and coordination of international climate finance to support sustainable development. The International Climate Finance Cell (ICFC), established within ERD, works to strategically access and manage climate finance from bilateral, regional, and multilateral sources. By identifying and prioritizing climate projects, engaging with key stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with international funding requirements, the ICFC strengthens Bangladesh’s ability to secure and utilize climate finance effectively.

The heat is no longer just a seasonal challenge—it is a signal. Across Bangladesh, temperatures have repeatedly approached or exceeded 40°C, with widespread heatwaves affecting large parts of the country in recent years. In 2026 alone, several districts recorded temperatures around 40°C, while scientists and development partners continue to warn that rising temperatures are becoming more frequent and intense. As we mark the 56th Independence Day of Bangladesh, the air quality map of Dhaka tells a sobering story. Currently, our city ranks among the most polluted in the world, with AQI levels often falling in the “unhealthy” range. Historically, Dhaka’s air has worsened over the past two decades—peak pollution occurs in winter, while the monsoon brings temporary relief, but the overall trend remains concerning.

On this day of pride and reflection, let’s turn awareness into action.

In the 56th Independence Day of Bangladesh, let’s promise together: we will no longer pollute our country. 🇧🇩

Small steps—greener transport, less waste burning, and urban greening—can rewrite our air quality story.

The Economic Relations Division (ERD) hosted a high-level training workshop “Unlocking External Climate Financing: From Project Identification to Resource Mobilisation” at BRAC CDM, Savar, from 24–26 October 2025. The workshop brought together government officials, development partners, and financial experts to strengthen capacities in designing and mobilising bankable climate projects.

Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of ERD, and AKM Sohel, UN Wing Chief and Additional Secretary of ERD, highlighted Bangladesh’s growing climate finance gap and the need for stronger institutional capacity, improved tracking of climate expenditures, and increased mobilisation of domestic and private resources. They emphasized a whole-of-government approach, multi-stakeholder collaboration through the Bangladesh Climate Development Partnership, and the use of innovative financing instruments to develop investible, country-led climate projects aligned with international priorities, with support from ADB.

Key outcomes:

Gained clear understanding of climate finance sources and instruments

Strengthened skills to design and mobilise bankable climate projects

Built stronger partnerships between public institutions, development partners, and financial actors

Equipped participants with practical tools to accelerate climate investment in Bangladesh

This workshop marks a key step in advancing Bangladesh’s capacity to mobilise and deploy climate finance for resilient and sustainable development.
