"an original hand drawn paper sketch" is what the Mies van der Rohe Award asked us to send them for the exposition of Flow as one of 2024 the shortlisted projects. In my notebooks I did find some rough sketches from early moments in the design proces. But somehow it did not feel right to tear them out and send them to Barcelona to be framed. Is it not romantic and even misleading to highlight the hand drawn early sketch? As if this analogue and lonely moment is the essential part of the design process? Walking through the atelier I found this piece of paper in the trash. It is a detail of the 3D model of the pool, printed out by Menno, that went through many hands and served as a guide to make decisions and changes (and later as a shopping- and a to do list). Gathering stains and folds on its way through the atelier it will now rest, forever I am told, in the collection of hand-drawn sketches of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe.
