STCV cataloguers not only see interesting books, they also find themselves in fascinating places. We regularly visit the archives of the Church-of-Our-Lady in Aarschot, where we work under the watchful eye of this friendly guard. At the moment, we are cataloguing a set of eighteenth-century ordinances about issues ranging from devastating natural disasters to people deemed undesirable by the government, such as people without fixed abode (landtloopers ende ledighgangers) and deserters.

(Un)orthodox use of square brackets: when you want to cite someone but also make clear that they are absolutely wrong. This book by Jean Hessels (1522-1566), professor of theology at the university of Leuven, reassures the reader that it will help keep them on the right path. The words of heretics have been put between [square brackets] so you can’t confuse them with the orthodox opinions. Or, how typography helps save your soul!
