📢 What do we translate at the European Parliament?

Episode 3 of our ‘What do we translate?’ series takes us inside the world of .

An amendment is a written proposal to change part of a draft text - by adding, deleting or replacing wording, figures or provisions. In Parliament, amendments are tabled and voted on as part of the work in committee and plenary.

A seemingly small wording change can carry a different political intention or affect how a provision is understood. This makes translating amendments a task of real precision!

Meet Iouliana, from our Greek translation team, to discover how our language professionals compare versions, navigate political nuance and help make parliamentary work accessible in all EU languages. 📝

Two days in Viterbo, two conversations about Europe and multilingualism. 🗨️

The European Parliament Liaison Office in Italy and the Representation of the European Commission in Italy, at the initiative of European Parliament Vice-President Antonella Sberna and in collaboration with OPES Italia, promoted the second edition of the Viterbo Half Marathon, bringing together sport, European values and opportunities for young people. 🏃

In this context, the European Parliament Translation Service was proudly represented by our Director-General, Valter Mavrič, who took part in two events at Università degli Studi della Tuscia - Viterbo.

On 24 September, he met students and academics for the seminar ‘Tradurre la democrazia’, exploring multilingualism, clear language, AI and the evolving role of language professionals. With 24 official languages and 552 language combinations, translation is essential to ensuring that EU citizens can access and understand the work of their institutions. 📝

On 25 September, Mr Mavrič delivered the keynote address at the institutional panel ‘From the University of Tuscia to Europe: New Pathways and Opportunities’, alongside Vice-President Antonella Sberna, Rector Tiziana Laureti and Vito Borrelli of the European Commission.

Two days of dialogue connecting languages, democracy, education, technology and Europe’s next generation. 💫

One language, two countries — and a translation challenge.

At the Parliament, translating into Dutch means considering how some expressions may differ in the Netherlands and in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium.

Let’s take the times of the day as an example. 🕑

Where someone from Belgium would use the word ‘middag’ to describe lunchtime, (12:00-14:00), in the Netherlands this word refers to 12:00-18:00. To talk about lunchtime, in the Netherlands one would say ‘lunchtijd’ or ‘tussen de middag’ instead.

In Belgium, the word ‘namiddag’ would be used to describe the Dutch ‘middag’ (12:00-18:00), but in the Netherlands ‘namiddag’ can be used to describe the later part of the afternoon (16:00-18:00).

This makes the translation of a seemingly simple expression like ‘early afternoon’ quite tricky. How did our language professionals tackle this? 🧐

Sometimes, the most effective solution is not to choose between variants, but to find wording that is immediately clear to everyone. For example, ‘na de lunch’ (‘after lunch’) can pinpoint the early afternoon without relying on a potentially ambiguous word. Another option would be to simply indicate the exact time, if known.

Because good translation is not just about finding the right words. It’s about making sure everyone understands exactly the same thing. 🌍

Have you ever come across similar challenges? How did you tackle them?
Let us know in the comments!
