What if Europe led on bio-based chemicals and plastics? 🌱🏭📈💼🌍

A new policy brief shows that upscaling these sectors could lift turnover to €148 billion by 2040 (vs €68 billion in the baseline) and create around 230,000 additional jobs, while reducing emissions across the EU chemicals and plastics industries.

Combined with our lead markets reports, the data and evidence are on the table. Now we need policy measures and a clear framework to unlock the potential of these innovations for EU competitiveness, autonomy, growth and jobs.

⚠️ 👣 Did you know that carbon from plants and carbon from fossil fuels are counted differently in climate reporting? 🌱

This can make it hard to compare materials fairly and to see the real benefits of switching from fossil to bio-based options.

A new joint statement, signed by 9 organisations and 22 companies, calls for one consistent method for both. The aim is to give a clearer and more honest picture of carbon in the products we use every day.

Every year, the average EU citizen generates around 129 kg of food waste. 🍎

Food waste is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet only about 26% of kitchen waste in the EU is captured, even though separate collection of bio-waste has been mandatory since 2024. One key reason is that municipalities often lack the funding and incentives to make it happen.

Collected separately, food waste can become compost to restore our soils and feedstock for bio-based products. ♻️

A study commissioned by BIC and prepared by Zero Waste Europe explores one option: Extended Producer Responsibility for food products. Wholesalers, importers and retailers (for their own brands) would help fund prevention, redistribution, consumer education and separate collection. The study also looks at the challenges, such as cost pass-through and administrative complexity.

On the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we would love to hear your views!

Did you know food waste and agricultural leftovers are being turned into everyday ingredients right now, across Europe? 🌾➡️🍽️

The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking - CBE JU is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), where BIC represents private industry in this collaboration, and its members are the companies actually building these solutions.

This is what public-private collaboration for a greener economy looks like! 🌍

📢 Lead markets don't flourish by chance, they require the right policies.

For Europe's bio-based industries to truly take off, businesses need predictable demand and the confidence to make long-term investments. That doesn't happen on its own.

📊 Our latest study looks at targeted demand-side measures that could help unlock the full potential of Europe's bio-based sector. One key finding: integrating bio-based requirements into existing EU legislation would give businesses the long-term regulatory certainty they need to invest with confidence and help accelerate the growth of lead markets across the continent.

📢 Turning waste into tomorrow's materials, that is the bioeconomy in action!

Across Europe, CBE JU-supported projects are showing how agricultural by-products, food waste and forestry residues can become sustainable ingredients, materials and products. 🫜🌿🧱🏠

Projects like AFTERBIOCHEM, WASTE2FUNC, SWEETWOODS and FRACTION demonstrate how circular solutions can:
✅ Reduce dependence on fossil resources
✅ Create new industrial value chains
✅ Support Europe's sustainability and competitiveness goals

These innovations show what long-term public-private partnerships can achieve.

A successor to the CBE JU is essential to keep this momentum going. Bio-based industries are among its main contributors, investing alongside the EU to bring these solutions to market. Without continuity, Europe risks losing the partnerships needed to scale what's already working.

📢Europe's bio-based industries are ready to grow, so why is not the market keeping up? 🏭 🌱🥤 🧵 📦 🧪 🪸 🍔 🚗 💄 👗

Our new lead markets study shows the challenge isn't just production costs. Bio-based products bring real environmental, industrial and strategic benefits — but these aren't currently rewarded by the market.

Without a clear policy signal to create demand, producers lack the certainty they need to de-risk investment and scale up production.
