🔥 The EU-funded C-PREG 400 project helped develop FireX-Preg, a new high-temperature composite platform that withstands temperatures of 400 °C and above, acts as a thermal shield and stops burning if ignited.

🚁 The results are striking: In a helicopter firewall test, replacing a titanium unit with FireX-Preg cut component weight by up to 48 % and production costs by up to 57 %.

🔋 In a full-scale electric aviation test with 216 fully charged battery cells, a FireX casing fully contained the fire, with no flames or hot gas leaking out.

♻️ A glass-fibre version can go straight into glass-production furnaces at end of life, offering a cleaner recycling route.

🕛 The Doomsday Clock stands at 85 seconds to midnight. Can war games help us step back from the brink?

First introduced in 1947, the clock reflects how close humanity may be to a global catastrophe, factoring in nuclear risks, climate change, disruptive technologies and biosecurity threats. As nuclear rhetoric and uncertainty over European security reshape the strategic landscape, understanding how conflicts escalate has become increasingly important.

The EU-funded WESUE project, supported by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, used war games to explore how conflicts could escalate or be contained, particularly when nuclear weapons are involved. From tabletop exercises to digital simulations, researchers tested different scenarios to examine how adversaries might respond under pressure.

Could tomorrow’s packaging, clothes and fertilisers come from plants and waste instead of oil and gas?

Across Europe, researchers are finding new uses for renewable resources and organic waste.

Their work is already turning plant sugars, food residues and even sewage sludge into everyday products.

Could the bioeconomy help Europe rely less on fossil resources?

🏆 Five EU-backed researchers have won the 2026 Wolf Prize!

Since 1978, the Wolf Prize has honoured scientists and artists from around the world whose outstanding achievements have contributed to a better world. Each prize comes with a medal, a diploma and USD 100 000 (around EUR 142 000).

This year, the Wolf Foundation recognised eight scientists. Five of them were supported by the European Research Council (ERC):
⚛️ Physics: Immanuel Bloch, for transformative advances in the control of ultracold atomic systems
🧬 Chemistry: Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman, for low-cost, large-scale DNA sequencing methods that power genomic medicine
➗ Mathematics: David Kazhdan and Joseph Bernstein, for foundational work that helped create geometric representation theory

Congratulations to the winners. 🇪🇺

Securing Europe’s land and sea borders requires close cooperation between national and EU agencies, including customs, border and coastguard authorities. The CONNECTOR project developed a platform that extends information sharing to all European integrated border management authorities, supporting safe, secure and seamless journeys for citizens.

Could a USB-like connection give satellites a second life in space?

Satellites from different manufacturers often use different connectors for power, data and other services.

Researchers have built and tested a universal interface that could make satellites easier to repair, upgrade and connect in orbit.

How could one common plug help reduce space debris and the need for costly replacement launches? ➡️ link.europa.eu/t8dBVm

Tyre wear, textiles, litter… plastic particles end up in our water, air and food. What does this mean for our health? 🤔

Alba Hernández Bonilla from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, coordinator of the EU-funded project, explains what research is revealing, and what we still don’t know.
