Q-O2 Q-O2 is a workspace for experimental music and sound art in Brussels. It offers artists residencies, organizes concerts and different projects.

Q-O2 is supported by The Flemish Government, VGC Brussels, and the European Union. Q-O2 is a structurally subsidized workspace for experimental contemporary music and sound art since 2006 and has its own space in the Brussels canal zone. The workspace developed out of the contemporary music ensemble Q-O2. In practice, Q-O2 operates at three levels: it offers working residencies to artists; carries out projects in collaboration with national and international arts organizations; and holds performances and concerts in its own space. In musical terms Q-O2 explores mainly three lines of approach: acoustic and electronic improvisation and composed music as well as installations and sound art. Through its conceptual preoccupations Q-O2 finds easily points of access to other disciplines.

𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟕

In 2027, Q-O2 will host 20 residencies of which 10 for international and 10 for local artists (living in Belgium) working with, on or around sound. We are open for artists, art workers and theorists who wish to work on a research-oriented project (please mind that we do not organise residencies directed at production, nor are we a rehearsal space). Duos are possible, and exceptionally small groups too.

We offer a work studio and material, a creative and communicative environment, and the possibility to present your work to a public and/or propose a workshop. For international residents we provide accommodation in a shared apartment and a contribution to travel expenses of max 200€. A small subsistence budget will be reserved for all artists who do not come with other funding.

To apply, please send a concise project proposal of not more than one page, a permanent link to your website or other secondary information (no temporary links) by September 15th to [email protected], stating “Residency27 – your name” as subject. Make sure that after sending the application you receive a confirmation of reception by email. Please also provide where you would be traveling from, how long you would like to stay (4 to 6 weeks; a period of more than 4 weeks we can not guarantee), and specify your interest in Q-O2 as a working environment.

Dear humans, humanoids, cyborgs, androids, synthetics, and all sentient beings,

A double digit to mark the number of bulletins published, it does bring up some new emotions for our editorial team. To celebrate this XL edition, we’ve compiled some audience comments from the past 10 days, which you can find, as usual, below the photos. Sadly, it also marks the announcement of the grand finale of our festival; join us a last time today canal-side at BUDA BXL, for a speculatively memorable sunset, among others :::

Today's timetable @ BUDA BXL, food available the whole time:

16:00 WACK (Jennifer Walshe & Neil Luck)
17:00 dj sniff
18:30 Adomas Palekas
19:00 - 21:00 Dubmorphology (Trevor Mathison & Gary Stewart)

𝓞𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓭 𝓪𝓽 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓯𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓿𝓪𝓵: 𝓷𝓸𝓽𝓮𝓼 𝓯𝓻𝓸𝓶 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓬𝓻𝓸𝔀𝓭

- "Acoustic is the future."
- "Last night my boiler malfunctioned and I dreamed that they’d added a fifth set."
- "It’s a good festival when no one has any rolling papers left."
- "My mom asked if I could turn off the printer while I was listening to my recording of one of the sets."
- "What was I doing before this festival started?"
- "‘I’d love to offer you a drink, but I lost all my money to the Oscillation bookie office.”
- "This was a great way to use up my company sick days."
- "Have we met before, or did I just see you in the crowd every day for the last 9 days?"

It's raining today, and I watch the cellophane streets,

You've been to every festival edition. You've read all the readers. You have a definite opinion on every edition of the festival website. But you’re still wondering: what is my true Oscillation personality? Luckily, you can find out here, by just looking at the content of your bag!

1) A stolen glass bottle of yesterday's bar, 5 different sets of keys, a picture of Gwendoline Robin, a track and field outfit:

--> You are: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥. You like to keep things exciting. You chase intensity over certainty. You turn up at the festival at the last minute, buy your ticket at the eleventh hour, and your friends never know whether you’ll actually make it.

2) Water bottle, snacks, power bank, tissues, hand sanitizer, a lock of Madison Greenstone's hair, multiple sound art books, recording device, waterproof outfit:

--> You are: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐫-𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝. You want to dive as deep as possible into every festival, taking in all the conversations, talks and workshops. No one knows this festival better than you.

3) Phone, keys, drumstick of Alexis Degrenier.

--> You are: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭. You travel light and move fast. You live in the now. No schedule, no backup plan, just instinct and curiosity.

We're halfway this trip ::: today, we're both at iMAL and at Hall M - URSquare, totally acoustic:

16:00 Guided tour + conversation #2 with Aernoudt Jacobs, Charlie Usher, and Sonia Saroya & Edouard Sufrin, moderated by Elena Biserna.

Evening concerts M – URSquare

20:00 Madison Greenstone: Wild acoustic phenomena created by indeterminacies within the clarinet's timbre. A practice drawing on a study of the polyphonic qualities of the clarinet, a traditionally monophonic instrument, and explores sonorities that sound outside of themselves, with highly spatial, sculptural, and disorienting qualities.

21:00 Alexis Degrenier: Using space constraint as an extension of his setup, Degrenier inhabits a bare acoustic space with tense threads between ephemeral appearances and spectral disappearances.

22:30 Gwendoline Robin: A performance inspired by high mountain listening, translated into elemental visual and sound installations exploring the balance between ephemeral and permanent, solidity and collapse.

My voice is quiet but my thoughts are loud,

[recording begins — background hum, indistinct chatter layered over low ventilation noise]

…have you ever heard of this place? – No, apparently something to do with Expo 58 and [word dissolves into static] ... have you seen my lipstick somewhere?

[pause — bird-like sounds passing overhead]

What’s the name of the hair salon run by an experimental UK electronic duo from Manchester?
[pause]
Autech-hair.

[distant laughter - faint distorted radio transmission]

During that performance, I felt as though I were the composer of the concert myself; I was given an arsenal of sounds within which I could move freely and focus on whatever I wanted; the foreground, the background, the echoes or the immediate sounds, and I created, I was holding the conductor's baton.

[pause - wild unstable sounds roaring, someone who has the hiccups]

Get me another one of those amazing pastries please.

[recording cuts abruptly]

Today, we're teaming up with Africa is/in the Future for a film night around this year’ theme and its echoes with Afrofuturism. Guided by Marie Umuhoza, the audience will be offered philosophical context and tools to decipher the symbolics of Afrofuturism referred to in two movies:

20:00 Introduction by Marie Umuhoza
20:30 The Last Angel of History - John Akomfrah (1996): A sci-fi documentary about Africa, history and memory in which Robert Johnson sells his soul for a black secret: technology producing the history of black music. 200 years into the future another itinerant figure, the Data Thief, sells his soul for the knowledge of his future.
21:30 I FELT IT INSIDE OF (ME) - .be (2023): An inner and outer dialogue about how the night(life) and its cultures affect q***r identities.

Victory is sweet even deep in cheap seats,

Dear 01100011 01110101 01110100 01101001 01100101 01110011,

This message was found yesterday on a toilet wall at the Beursschouwburg: “What is the exact opposite of entropy? Could it be a system in which individuals come together into a single, tightly bound structure, maximizing potential energy?” So no, it’s definitely not us already getting emotional already on day 3 of the 10.

Today, we’re both inside and outside at Maison de la Création Modelwijk (metro Roi Baudoin, NOT at Bockstael :)):

Outside (free admittance)

16:00 Presentation workshops DJism, led by Soumaya Phéline and Jano
16:00-19:00 Paul Gründorfer installation
16:30 Bárbara González installation activation
17:00 Vica Pacheco & Loto Retina performance
17:30 Bárbara González installation activation
18:00 Vica Pacheco & Loto Retina performance

Inside

20:00 Imane Guemssy: A pioneer and ambassador of Gnaoua music, breaking taboos by blending tradition with modern influences while emphasizing its spirituality.

21:00 NikNak: An afrofuturistic sonic journey through turntablism and immersive sound design, transporting audiences into a richly textured world where rhythm, memory, and imagination collide.

Daytime viewing,

𝕆𝕤𝕔𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 𝕔𝕒𝕣𝕠𝕦𝕤𝕖𝕝 ::: 𝕋𝕙𝕖 ℙ𝕣𝕠𝕥𝕠𝕔𝕠𝕝

Our discouse program :::

30.04, Mariam Rezaei @ OASIS.bxl: A lecture performance offering deeper insight into Rezaei’s work and turntable skills, using a digital vinyl system to manipulate samples in real time, while extending classic techniques.

02.05, Jennifer Walshe @ Bodeek: Drawing from her essay 13 Ways of Looking at AI, Art & Music, Walshe proposes a framework for understanding AI-generated art from multiple simultaneous perspectives.

24.04, Reading group Hannah Arendt and Technology by Judith Campagne @ Beursschouwburg: Bringing together writings by Hannah Arendt and others, this session forms a collective reading exploring reflections on automation, science, and technology, inviting shared thinking through voices, texts, and discussion.

01.05, Joost Rekveld @ Q-O2: Working with experimental moving images and analogue computing, Rekveld re-enacts historical techniques and investigates crystalline materials to rethink human–machine relations, not predicated on control.

01.05, Femke Snelting @ Q-O2: Moving across scales of digital infrastructure, Snelting tries to sense the repercussions of digital practice today, feeling out possibilities for resonating otherwise with hardware, software and networks

01.05, Marie Thompson @ Q-O2: A talk examining the rise of “sonic surrogates” in sound technologies, connecting them to histories of recording and care, and questioning how these systems shape and reflect social relations.

01.05, Alanna Stuart @ Q-O2: In “Mi Di Deh,” Stuart blends memoir and analysis to explore how q***r and female DJs and producers remix Jamaican sound system traditions within Toronto’s diasporic music culture.

01.05, Gary Stewart @ Q-O2: Stewart introduces The Materials Montage Mixer, a live audiovisual system that reworks archival material into new configurations, creating connections across time, space, and collective memory.

Vica Pacheco & Loto Retina at Maison de la création Modelwijk on 26.04 for Oscillation ::: from the Mothership

A live duet for two large-scale hydraulic sound sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian whistling vessels creating a continuous, mirrored yet never identical dialogue. Developed in collaboration between Vica Pacheco and Loto Retina, the piece explores sound as a result of physical processes rather than fixed musical notation. Sound emerges acoustically from the interaction of water, air, pressure, gravity, and time.

Vica Pacheco is a Brussels-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans experimental music, ceramics, and 3D animation, exploring mythological crossbreeding and human and non-human interactions through immersive performances and installations. Loto Retina’s music combines micro-sample chaos, gloopy bass, and unpredictable percussion into organic and mechanical sounds that feel both digital and animistic, growling as much as it grooves.

𝕆𝕤𝕔𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 𝕔𝕒𝕣𝕠𝕦𝕤𝕖𝕝 ::: 𝕋𝕙𝕖 ℂ𝕚𝕣𝕔𝕦𝕚𝕥

Cybernetic audiovisual environments, percussive (dis)appearances, reel-to-reel cyborgism, turntablism eclecticism, ephemeral audiovisual balances, in-situ traces, interactive forest memories, sonic morphings/blurred identities, vibraphone nuances :::

25.04, MSHR @ Beursschouwburg: Electrical signals and human presence unfold into dense networks of causality that babble with life-like current; homemade instruments conjure spatial feedback systems of light and sound.

29.04, Alexis Degrenier @ Hall M – URSquare: Using space constraint as an extension of his setup, Degrenier inhabits a bare acoustic space with tense threads between ephemeral appearances and spectral disappearances.

25.04, Augustė Vickunaitė @ Beursschouwburg: A performance in which the human body, reel-to-reel tape recorders, and magnetic tape form a closed system, channeling bodily energy into mechanical motion, only to be torn and destroyed.

03.05, dj sniff @ BUDA BXL: Merging experimental, hip hop, and free improvisation through self-built instruments and conceptual approaches to turntablism and audio culture.

29.04, Gwendoline Robin @ URSquare: A performance inspired by high mountain listening, translated into elemental visual and sound installations exploring the balance between ephemeral and permanent, solidity and collapse.

02.05, Ato No Mae @ Bodeek: A performance incorporating found objects, self-built instruments, keyboards, and voice, leaving behind an atmosphere, a presence, and traces within the space.

25.04, Ikbal Lubys @ Beursschouwburg: A performance inspired the tropical forests of Kalimantan and the impact of deforestation, playing the forest’s memory as an interactive testimony of its transformation.

28.04, Diane Barbé @ Rosas Performance Space: Playing with sonic morphings and blurred identities, presenting several pieces by handmade wind instruments and synthetic-acoustic sculptures.

02.05, Rubén Orio & Andrés Navarro play Sarah Hennies @ Bodeek: Repetition and subtle nuance give rise to instabilities in the sound, dissolving the edges of virtuosity and of time, and allowing tones to unfold in space.

Gwendoline Robin fully acoustic in Hall M – URSquare on 29.04 for Oscillation ::: from the Mothership

Gwendoline Robin talks about her performace for Oscillation ::: from the Mothership. She is a Belgian visual artist and performer based in Brussels, in her work, combining installation, performance, and video, she explores the fragility and power of elements through ephemeral actions.

Coexistences #1 is a performance inspired by moments of listening and observing in high mountain plateaus, hearing river waters, wind, landslides, marmot calls, and noticing changes of light and color on rocks and forest paths. Back in the studio, these experiences feed visual and sound installations made from elemental materials, exploring the balance between the ephemeral and the permanent, between solidity and collapse, a way to rediscover the pleasure of connecting with natural and constructed spaces.
