What does decent work look like in Africaâs fastest-growing sectors? And how can research help turn ambition into action?
đ Yesterday in Brussels, Enabel and the Research Institute for Work and Society (HIVA) of KU Leuven together more than 80 researchers, policymakers, social partners, private sector representatives and practitioners to explore how to accelerate progress towards decent work and better employment opportunities in Africa.
Discussions drew on research findings and practical experiences from sectors with strong job creation potential, including critical raw materials, transport and port services, coffee and cocoa value chains, hospitality and domestic work.
Some key messages emerged from the discussions :
đč Research can drive change by informing policy dialogue, strengthening institutions and supporting practical solutions that reflect workersâ and employersâ realities
đč Lasting progress means tackling systemic barriers. Stronger institutions, market systems, value chains and incentives for public and private actors are key to turning growth into decent work
đč The private sector is essential, but investment has the greatest impact when it promotes inclusion, strengthens local enterprises and expands opportunities for women and young people
đč Job creation alone is not enough. Economic transformation must also improve working conditions, labour rights, social protection and access to skills development
đĄ The conference provided an opportunity to bridge research, policy and practice, strengthen partnerships, and identify ways towards more inclusive, productive and sustainable employment in Africa.
