“I don’t do politics.” But political decisions shape our rights, our freedoms and our future.

Solidarity means standing up against injustice, even when it doesn’t affect us personally. Democracy needs people who speak up, take part and hold power accountable.

Building a united, democratic and federal Europe starts with each of us. Get involved. Make your voice count.

🇪🇺⚖️ The Union of European Federalists congratulates the International Criminal Court, its judges and all its staff on being awarded the European Parliament’s 2026 Sakharov Prize—a powerful recognition of their commitment to international justice and victims’ rights.

This recognition must be followed by concrete action. UEF condemns the Trump administration’s interference and sanctions against the Court and reiterates its call for the immediate activation of the EU Blocking Statute to safeguard the ICC’s independence and ability to operate. We stand with the Coalition for the ICC and the “Defend the ICC” campaign led by Eumans and No Peace Without Justice.

Defending the Court means fighting impunity, protecting victims and upholding an international order founded on the rule of law. Europe must live up to its values.

“Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven’t been doing much.”
— Donald Trump, 19 October 2026.

Speaking about a possible meeting with Putin and Xi, Trump used these words to downplay Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Such remarks minimise the suffering of Ukrainians and the threat Russia’s aggression poses to Europe’s security.

🇺🇦🇪🇺 Ukraine’s future is European. And Europe must be ready.

That means sustained support for Ukraine, a credible path to EU membership, and a federal Europe capable of acting together, defending its values and ensuring its own security.

We stand with Ukraine. For its freedom, our shared future, and a just and lasting peace.

Europe cannot afford to remain a spectator. 🇪🇺

In just a few days, the Trump administration has taken a series of decisions that have raised serious concerns in Ukraine and across Europe:

The US reached a controversial agreement to ease restrictions on Russian diesel imports — a move criticised by a bipartisan group of US senators as benefiting Moscow. Axios

Ukraine has also seen restrictions affecting Starshield/Starlink services used for military operations. Reuters reported that the order to limit Starshield originated inside the White House, although Trump later denied imposing such restrictions. Reuters

And just before new Russia sanctions were due to take effect, Trump invoked a presidential waiver to hold back measures contained in the Lindsey O. Graham sanctions law. The decision triggered criticism from lawmakers of both parties. Financial Times

Whatever Washington’s calculations, the lesson for Europe is clear:

A continent that depends on others for its security can see its strategic position changed overnight.

Europe needs the political, economic and military capacity to defend its own interests.

A fragmented Europe is a weaker Europe.
A federal Europe can act.

🇪🇺 **WE NEED A EUROPEAN COMMON DEFENCE.**

At the Arraiolos Summit in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, on 16 October 2026, Italian President Sergio Mattarella delivered a powerful message: Europe must act together to guarantee its security and preserve peace.

As reported by ANSA, President Mattarella called for the rapid interoperability of European military capabilities to restore the strategic balance in response to Russia's posture, stressing that such a balance has historically been essential to preventing aggression and safeguarding peace.

His message goes beyond defence. **Europe urgently needs faster, more effective decision-making and far-reaching institutional reforms**, especially as it prepares for enlargement to the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova.

An EU of more than 30 Member States cannot function effectively under today's decision-making rules.

For the Union of European Federalists (UEF), this means moving beyond national vetoes, extending qualified majority voting, strengthening European democracy, reforming the EU Treaties, and establishing a genuine European fiscal capacity to finance our common priorities.

**A common defence requires common institutions, common resources and democratic accountability. Enlargement and deeper political integration must go hand in hand.**

🇪🇺 **On behalf of the Union of European Federalists, we thank President Sergio Mattarella for his clear commitment to European unity, common defence and the institutional reforms our Union urgently needs.**

The time to build a stronger, sovereign, democratic and federal Europe is now.

**Europe must be able to decide, act and defend itself. Together.**

Europe’s security needs infrastructure we can control.

On 14 October, restrictions on Starshield, SpaceX’s military satellite communications service, disrupted Ukrainian strike and air-defence drone missions. Service was reported restored the following day, but the vulnerability remains.

Europe needs its own satellite communications network for defence—and a federal Europe with the power and resources to build it.

Support Ukraine. Build European sovereignty.
