Last week, our Management Board came together in Gdańsk, and made decisions—among many other things—on the JPI Oceans portfolio. The result is five new topics... and a half ⬇️

Three new Joint Actions have been officially adopted after a scoping process of a little under a year: Plastic-Associated Chemicals, which will be implemented through a Joint Call, and Offshore Infrastructures and Electromagnetic Fields, both launching as Knowledge Hubs.

In turn, two ideas submitted by our community, shipwrecks and marine extreme events, will now be explored as Scoping Actions. Over the months, we will review them to decide whether a joint effort among our member countries would add value; if so, they might follow a similar path as the topics above.

💡 Together, these decisions show how countries rely on JPI Oceans to move from shared priorities to shared resources, using the instrument that fits each topic best. As for the “half”, you will have to read the article to find out: https://www.jpi-oceans.eu/en/five-and-half-new-topics-jpi-oceans

Almost last, but not least: our warm thanks go to our hosts at IBW PAN for welcoming us so generously, Instytut Budownictwa Wodnego Polskiej Akademii Nauk

Now, really last: this is the first in a series on the meeting’s outcomes, so stay tuned for more articles on our website.

⚓ The research vessel SONNE has set sail from San Diego for the expedition to the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean, where scientists will revisit sites affected by polymetallic nodule collector trials in 2021.

Over the coming 54 days at sea, 39 researchers representing 17 institutions from seven European countries will investigate the long-term effects of these trials. The objective is to assess how deep-sea habitats and ecosystems have changed, how long the effects of sediment plumes persist, and whether artificial hard substrates can support recolonisation of the seafloor.

💡 The findings are particularly important as international regulations on deep-sea mining are being discussed at the International Seabed Authority. Deep-sea ecosystems remain poorly understood, and the nodules that provide habitats for many organisms grow only one to two millimetres per million years.

JPI Oceans has supported research on the environmental impacts of potential deep-sea mining through three consecutive MiningImpact projects since 2015.

15 years, 15 stories 🎬 And this one's a little different: for the first time in the series, we turn the lens inwards, to two people at the heart of the JPI Oceans Secretariat.

Willem De Moor’s history with JPI Oceans goes back further than the organisation itself. In 2010, while working for the Flemish government, he helped organise a conference in Ostend that produced a declaration from the marine and maritime community calling for the creation of a Joint Programming Initiative on oceans. He has been part of this adventure ever since, first as a jack-of-all-trades piecing together the founding vision and governance structure, and today as Deputy Director.

Lavinia Giulia Pomarico came into the picture a bit later. She joined in 2020 as an early-career professional. The topic of intergenerational engagement is very dear to her; she now supports it through our involvement in the AllAtlanticOcean. She has also taken the reins of Joint Actions, run with JPI Climate, including sea-level rise work and the forthcoming in Focus report.

Together, they show what it looks like to carry an organisation's history forward, with no shortage of excitement for what is still to come 👇

That’s a wrap on the Atlantic Summit 2026!

Two days of discussions on future priorities for the Atlantic Ocean, with conversations spanning resilient coasts, ocean observation, healthy and productive seas, science diplomacy, and the future of Atlantic cooperation.

JPI Oceans was pleased to be part of the Summit, held in the context of Ireland’s EU Council Presidency, contributing in several capacities:
🔹 Blue Carbon Knowledge Hub: organising an event around our three policy briefs and launching the final brief, focused on the Nature Restoration Regulation.
🔹 UN Ocean Decade North Atlantic Regional Blueprint Dialogue: participating in discussions to develop regional priorities and solution pathways.
🔹 All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance: fulfilling our role in the OKEANO CSA by supporting the Alliance’s capacity-building efforts through the Intergenerational Hackathon.

It was also a pleasure to take part in discussions closely linked to our Joint Actions, ranging from AMOC and underwater noise to ocean observing and low-cost sensors; to follow progress on the European Ocean Pact and Act, as well as the EU Ocean Eye; and to reconnect with long-standing partners while making new connections across the Atlantic community.

🤲 Thank you to our hosts, University of Galway, Atlantic Technological University and the Marine Institute, and to the Irish Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science for its support.

Mu*****ns in the Sea: the latest developments ⏰

A lot has been happening lately around our work in the MMinE-SwEEPER and CAMMera projects and our support to the *****nsinthe ea community, so we have just published a new article on our website. It covers recent developments on the remediation of UXO, AXO and the legacy of warfare in Europe’s seas, as well as JPI Oceans’ role in connecting research, policy and action.

So, what’s the state of play?

☑️ The European Commission is preparing an EU Strategy for the Safe Remediation of Mu*****ns in European seas under the European Ocean Pact.

☑️ Germany has launched an Immediate Action Programme, backed by €400 million, to address unexploded mu*****ns in the sea.

☑️ Research and innovation projects are expanding their work across Europe, while industry is becoming increasingly involved in discussions on survey, clearance and remediation.

☑️ At the Mu*****ns in the Sea Symposium in Monaco in September, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining confirmed that IMAS 09.60 on Underwater Survey and Clearance of Explosive Ordnance will be revised, taking into account more than a decade of new research and operational experience.

And JPI Oceans continues to support this work through the Mu*****ns in the Sea Knowledge Portal and research library, regional workshops, policy engagement, the Mu*****ns in the Sea Community and other activities.

Great to see the solutions developed during the 2026 All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Intergenerational Hackathon taking another step forward at the Atlantic Summit in Galway, with Early-Career Ocean Professionals bringing their prototypes back on stage!

Through the Coordination and Support Action, JPI Oceans was proud to support the organisation of the Dialogues and Hackathon, helping create opportunities and connections across generations and geographies.

Yesterday in Galway, JPI Oceans and the Marine Institute brought together experts and policymakers for “Blue Carbon in EU Ocean, Climate and Biodiversity Policy”, ahead of the Atlantic Summit 2026.

The event marked an important milestone for the JPI Oceans Blue Carbon Knowledge Hub, bringing together its three policy briefs and the recommendations developed to strengthen the recognition of blue carbon ecosystems across major European policy frameworks.

The latest and final brief, newly launched, focuses on the EU Nature Restoration Regulation, providing recommendations to support the integration of blue carbon ecosystems into National Restoration Plans. It follows earlier briefs addressing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the EU LULUCF Regulation.
Together, the series reflects the Knowledge Hub’s work at the science-policy interface, translating scientific knowledge into concrete recommendations for European policy.

A big thank you to the Galway City Museum for hosting us, and to everyone who joined us in Galway and contributed to the discussion.

🎥 Couldn’t join us in Galway? We’re bringing some of the conversation to you. During the event, we caught up with some of the experts behind this work to hear their reflections on blue carbon, the journey of the Knowledge Hub, and what comes next. Stay tuned for the interviews over the coming weeks.
