Statement on the Migration Situation at the EU’s Southern Border

The European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) notes with concern the increasing migratory pressure on the European Union’s southern external border, particularly in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

The effective protection of the European Union’s external borders is a prerequisite for preserving the integrity of the Schengen Area and maintaining citizens’ confidence in a common European migration and asylum policy. Member States at the external border must receive the political, operational and financial support necessary to fulfil this responsibility.

LYMEC calls for the full implementation and enforcement of the European Union’s migration and asylum framework. Irregular entry into the European Union cannot become an alternative to the legal migration and international protection systems established under EU law.

We further call upon the Kingdom of Morocco to fully comply with its commitments under existing agreements with Spain and the European Union, including close cooperation on border management and the prompt readmission of Moroccan nationals who are subject to legally enforceable return decisions.

Here’s how we are turning our commitment to gender equality into meaningful change👇

Young women still face structural and cultural barriers that discourage political participation. We want to change that by concrete action - and last weekend was a step in that direction.

During the Women Leadership Accelerator, 11 young leaders gathered in Bucharest to gain practical tools to drive change within party structures and leadership practices.

🎯The result? Skills, empowerment and a draft for new guidelines and recommendations for meaningful participation in LYMEC and liberal youth organisations across Europe.

And we are not stopping here.

These guidelines will be presented at our next Congress as part of LYMECs participation reform.

Because building a more inclusive and resilient democratic culture starts with us.

Get ready for our next Digital Assembly - Security in the Balticsđź’ˇ

From the strategic importance of the Suwałki Gap to the recurrent drone incursions into European airspace, security and defence are increasingly part of everyday life in the Baltic States.

👉At our next Digital Assembly, we will discuss the challenges the Baltic States are facing in security and defence, as well as initiatives and solutions taken by the states.

🧩You will also get a chance to hear about the ongoing work and updates from the LYMEC Bureau and the presentation of the Programme of Action 2026-2028.

Today, we mark 31 years since the Srebrenica Genocide. On this day in 1995, the Army of Republika Srpska entered Srebrenica, a UN-declared safe area in eastern Bosnia. Over the following days, more than 8,372 Bosniak men and boys were systematically murdered in what was later recognised as genocide and remains the worst war crime committed on European soil since the Second World War.

As we honour the memory of the victims, we reaffirm our commitment to combating hatred, genocide denial, and all forms of discrimination. Srebrenica reminds us of our shared responsibility to ensure that such atrocities never happen again, against anyone.

Your AC won’t save you if the planet is barely hanging on.

This heat isn’t an exception anymore. It’s the new normal.

And the uncomfortable truth? Europe is only getting hotter. Our cities are overheating, wildfires are spreading, and droughts are becoming more frequent. We cannot simply adapt by turning the temperature down indoors while the temperature outside keeps rising.

And Liberal solutions mean acting now:

🌍 Investing in clean energy and innovation.

🏙️ Building climate-resilient cities and infrastructure.

⚡ Ending our dependence on fossil fuels.

🤝 Working together across Europe to protect both our environment and our prosperity.

Climate action isn’t about giving things up or restricting our quality of life. It’s about ensuring we still have a future worth living in. Because there is no air conditioner for a collapsing climate.

The 50th Anniversary Congress of ALDE Party is one we won’t forget anytime soon. 🩷

For us every Congress is a marathon: After weeks of preparation, we show up with a strong presence, making sure young liberals were represented throughout the Congress - from the debates and break-out sessions to our stand, thanks to our incredible delegation. đź’Ş

Our delegates step up every time and shape the conversations on the congress floor and beyond. They advocate for our our policies within ALDE, and make sure your voice is represented.

A special highlight was Ilija Jerković inspiring panel discussion on the importance of young activists in Serbia and Hungary, showcasing the vital role young people play in defending and advancing liberal democracy across Europe.

We were also proud to put our Young Liberals to Watch campaign in the spotlight, celebrating the next generation of liberal leaders making an impact in their communities and beyond.

Here’s to celebrating the next 50 years of the ALDE Party and LYMEC! 🥳
