⚡ How do electricity markets help balance power systems?

By matching electricity supply and demand, electricity markets keep power systems balanced while distributing costs and benefits among producers and consumers.

Well-designed markets also guide investments where they bring the greatest benefit.

📍 Better locational price signals could save the EU power system €26-61 billion annually by 2040.
🌱 Locational auctions help identify hotspots for renewable energy projects, maximising their integration into the grid while reducing costs for consumers.
🔌 Better market design also eases grid congestion, as volumes of costly grid rebalancing, known as redispatch, could increase almost sixfold by 2040.

Our research supports the design of electricity markets that are efficient, transparent and ready for Europe’s changing energy system.

Students in Belgium: we have a challenge for you! 🎓

Are you studying AI, data science, engineering, environmental science, public policy, communication, journalism, or a related field?

The European AI Challenge 2026: From Data to Policy will take place in Brussels on 29 and 30 October 2026.

Over two days, students will work in multidisciplinary teams to answer one urgent question:

How can AI help Europe better prepare for future floods?

Participants will use AI tools and geospatial datasets to analyse risk scenarios, identify exposed populations and infrastructure, and turn their findings into policy recommendations.

Moreover, teams will present their work to a jury, and a prize will be awarded to the winning team. 🏆

You do not need to fit one single profile. Instead, we are looking for students who can bring different skills to the table: technical analysis, policy thinking, environmental knowledge, communication, and creativity.

Applications are now open: https://www.fari.brussels/calendar/european-ai-challenge-2026

Around half of Europe’s river network is affected by freshwater salinisation.

A new study in Nature Communications provides the first pan-European assessment of the phenomenon, analysing river data from 35 European countries and water quality records spanning 1970 to 2024.
The research, carried out by an international team of scientists including JRC researchers, found that 26% of the European river network is affected by low salinisation, 14% by moderate, 9% by severe and 1% by extreme salinisation.

More than 23,000 km of rivers and streams exceed a salinity level of 1 mS/cm – well above available international standards for the protection of aquatic life.

Higher salinity can reshape aquatic communities, threaten biodiversity and affect water resources used for drinking, agriculture and industry.

The study also identifies previously underreported salinisation hotspots, particularly in Romania and Hungary, and provides a scientific basis for strengthening the monitoring and management of freshwater salinisation across Europe.

Europe’s electricity network spans more than 11 million kilometres. But to sustain growing renewable power, our grids must become stronger, smarter and more interconnected. ⚡

Our research is helping understand what Europe needs to keep electricity flowing securely and affordably while integrating growing volumes of renewable energy.

🔌 Stronger cross-border interconnections can help electricity move to where it is needed and bring economic benefits across Europe.
🔋 Batteries can store excess solar and wind power and release it when demand rises. Europe already has more than 3,500 energy storage projects, with 75 GW of operational power.
🏘️ Renewable energy communities can make electricity consumption and production more flexible, helping people lower their bills while supporting grid stability.

From stronger connections to smarter ways of balancing supply and demand, resilient grids are an essential part of Europe’s energy transition.

It is time to move beyond a simple “social media is good or bad” framing.

Studies by the Joint Research Centre show that there is no single, uniform relationship between social media use and poorer mental health across all young people. Rather, concerns increase depending on how time is spent online.

A similar pattern applies to digital engagement and academic performance. It is not social media alone, but excessive, unregulated and passive use, that is linked to poorer academic performance.

Our policy response needs to take these nuances into account and address the real risks the online world brings.

Drought now affects half of the EU and UK territory, while wildfires continue to rage across the continent.

Driven by global warming, Europe is becoming hotter and drier, and the impacts are increasingly visible.

Our latest data show that 50% of the EU and UK were under drought conditions in late July. Scarce rainfall and severe heatwaves are pushing major European rivers to record-low levels in August, disrupting navigation, water supply, agriculture and power generation.

At the same time, wildfire activity has increased across the continent. The area burnt by wildfires in the EU by 5 August 2026 already exceeded that recorded for the same period in 2025, according to the European Forest Fires Information System.

Heatwaves have also pushed temperatures to record levels in several European countries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO)’s mid-July report, data from five countries show more than 10 000 excess deaths during the most extreme episodes.

Our experts support the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre and national authorities by providing mapping and geospatial information to help operations on the ground.

Powering Europe with home-grown clean energy ☀️🌬️

Moving away from imported fossil fuels will require Europe to radically expand its clean electricity generation.

JRC projections show that the EU’s electricity demand could more than double between 2023 and 2050 as it advances towards climate neutrality. Solar and wind would drive this transformation, together accounting for 80% of total electricity generation capacity, while hydropower and nuclear energy would remain stable.

Our research also highlights Europe’s considerable potential:

☀️ Rooftop solar on the EU’s 271 million buildings could meet 40% of its electricity needs.
🌱 Photovoltaics installed on just 1% of the EU’s utilised agricultural area could generate more solar electricity than required by the EU’s 2030 targets.
🌬️ A substantial share of Europe’s onshore wind potential remains untapped.
⚙️ The EU already has the capacity to manufacture 62% of the wind energy components it will need by 2030.

⚡ Electrification has a key role to play in Europe's energy transition.

Buildings, transport and industry remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels and together account for a significant share of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to clean, homegrown electricity can help reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen energy resilience.

🔬 Our scientists map out practical pathways for this transition . Their research shows that heat pumps can operate three to five times more efficiently than fossil-fuelled boilers, For passenger cars, the JRC projects a 77% cut in energy consumption and nearly 100% reduction in CO₂ emissions from 2023 to 2050, considering current technology maturity, and climate and energy policies in place for low- and net zero vehicles.

Industry is also a key part of the picture. JRC analysis highlights that expanding access to low-carbon electricity and strengthening grid capacity will be essential to support the decarbonisation of industrial production.

Together, these insights help provide the evidence needed to support informed policymaking for Europe's energy transition.
